Well I guess it's time to seperate does from their fawns. As this will be our first time I just had a couple of questions and appreciate any other advice.

Pens are setup such that open gates create an alley from pen to pen. Is it feasible to think that the fawns can be seperated just by herding them slowly thru alley? I am thinking it will be like herding chickens!

Should we just dart fawns and transfer them?

Once fawns are seperated is it a problem that they can see Mom thru fence? Should I have shade cloth during this process to limit their visibility of momma?

Arthur,

I don't know that you will be able to get the fawns separated from their moms in order to get them into the other pen...........as far as them being able to see their mom through the fence is concerned that us not an issue.......good luck......

Sometimes we can separate some of the tamest ones out with treats and a couple guys to work gates. We generally use a handling facility, though, because it ends up getting more difficult as the process goes on if you are just trying to sort them. If we didn't have a handling facility, we would sort the ones we could sort without getting them too worked up and dart the rest. We haven't had trouble with them being able to see each other, but some space between them wouldn't hurt.

leave the gates open to both pens over night and check them the next day. My fawns always like to sit next to each other and they actually seperated themselves this year. All I had to do was close the gates when I went down to feed. Moms in one pen and fawns in the other. no stress on you or the deer. Its worth a shot. Just let them use both pens for a night and check them in the morning.

Take your time and move the does if possible. You can lure them with peanuts or marshmallows. It might take more than one attempt to sort them. If they start to get a little worked up, stop and try again later. Good luck and patience is the key.

Open a gate just a little and make is so the fawns can squeeze through and not the does. I do this to start with called my buck strainer....to separate the bucks from does then to get the fawns out. Withhold feed and put some just out of reach on other side of the gate opening. Jim
