Been working out of town, and just opened my ballot and bylaws amendment. Had a question on the eligibility, conflict of interest, and paid employee of another association part. My question, does this mean if I were a paid employee of the Angus association would I be ineligible?

However, I agree that no one should ever be on the board if they are a paid employee of a sitting board member.

Obviously, I think it is a bad move to deny eligibility to any one who is a paid employee of any livestock association, we could really use some fresh ideas from like-minded folks!

James,

I haven't seen the amendments you mentioned but usually associations are concerned about conflicts of interest where a person is a paid employee of one association and wants to sit on the board of another association because if push comes to shove, where does that persons loyalty really lye? Many times, associations have different objectives and different agendas and therefore creates a conflict of interest if a person is in a leadership position of 2 opposing associations.

Also, there are people that want to be in control by being in a leadership position of every association they can. Sometimes their motives are for the good of the industry in general but there are times this is done simply to promote their own personal agenda.

There's not many paid positions in our industry and I'm sure NADeFA has good reasons for these amendments.
