I am wanting to enclose a peice of property I own for personal and family use and was wondering if anyone knows where I legally stand...I have searched everywhere I know to look and cant find any laws/regs about cervids other than they are no longer issuing permits for breeder or commercial pens, I am not looking to breed and sell deer or sell hunts, and was thinking of buying some does from good genetics and having them live bred or ai'd before they arrive here....does this sound stupid?? is it worth trying to put together or would i be better off to run now??

NC is a no go. Hopefully that will change in the future though. You are not allowed to do anything with Pen Raised deer. As far as where you can locate this information for your self. You will need to contact your Dept of Agriculture and your Division of Fish and Wildlife (DNR). I have made this call personally and they do not want to allow any deer breeding in the state or shooting preserves for deer in the state. You can run them for sheep and rams but that is it I believe.

It still blows my mind that a person can't do something like this on their own property. We have lost so many freedoms in this country and it is so hard to get them back. Your state has just basically driven you elsewhere if you want to pursue your dream.

Yes they have and its horrible. What happened to free enterprise???? Deer farming is a legitimate and potentially profitable business for both you and the community yet people on their high horses in political positions have agendas.

This gentleman just wants to hunt some quality deer on his own property. He wants to fence his property and put legally raised deer onto it. This doesn't affect or hurt his neighbors in any way or the wild deer population in any way. So the question remains, why can't he do this? I'm sure other property owner have put fences around their properties - maybe not 8 ft. but fences none the less. What happened to the "pursuit of happiness" - and not at your neighbor's expense???

I just encourage everyone to be politically aware. Join organizations like SCI and NRA - these folks support our business and the right to hunt however you choose. Watch who these organizations endorse and support.

We recently spoke with Shawn Shaefer and he told us how NRA helped out North Dakota recently when there was legislation again trying to shut them down. He said NRA sent out letters to every member in the state telling them to oppose this legislation. Now that's the kind of backing this industry needs!

what is technicall considered "high fence" 8'? if you fenced your cattle with a 7' fence would a deer most likely jump it? I have a trail cam pic of a wild doe jumping a 4' fence with about 18" to spare but the next pic was the pack of the neighbors deer dogs coming through the fence

It seems reasonable to me that if one would want to fence his property, the height of the fence would be his decision. I can't think of any stste that can prevent you from erecting a fence on your property regardless of the height. You may not be able to bring deer into or out of the enclosure, but erecting a fence on your own property is still legal in all 50 states and Puerto Rico as far as I know.

here you can fence any height here, but 8 ft or higher must have an opening or access for wild deer to be able to get out, if there are any in there. if they come and go, thats fine too.....with no access available for them to leave, its considered captive......

i know cause I am battling that issue myself
