So I'm a new farmer in kansas. I just got my CWD cert. with a date of 10/15/02. A need to purchase a buck to use as a cover for this coming years AI. I've found a button buck with an great pedigree with names like Enhance, Rampage, and Maxbo. I think the price is very fair. But I just noticed this morning that this buck would change my cwd date to 2009. I want to make this deal but is this going to hurt my business. Should I or shouldn't I.

All depends how fast you plan on selling deer. 5 years cwd tested is the rule of thumb for most states!

I found out something interesting here in my State of Montana.  They only keep you at a maximum level of five years.  That way if you do something wrong they can reduce you to a level four as your punishment.  At a level four you would have to wait a year before you could sell out of State.  This was in the new CWD program or maybe the State just made this up.  Basiclly forces you to comply.

But how many buyers look at the date and not the level. If it just went off of a level five I'd be OK with it. But I'd hate to limit myself from the guys with herds with 10 years of monitoring.

Buyers will be changed to your status even if theirs was 2002 , so if they were 2002 they would go to 2009.

Not all states have levels, Indiana doesn't.

I ALWAYS look at CWD date! Before any purchase..........my rule of thumb is it don't match mine .......I don't buy yours!

If it doesn't matter WHY do States keep track ?

Thats what I'm worried about. Do preserves also look at this.

Its hard to answer with each state doing their own thing and making their own rules. If you play it safe and make sure you don't go..Backwards..in your dates you will be good to go!

And there you go again were just playing into the hands of these States that make their own little rules.  Time this industry has only one CWD level and that is a level five.  Everyone is the same and industry growth will then prevail.  Keep up playing whatever each State want only kills the industry in the long run.

Jack you bring up a great point ! Whats the sense of having a 5 year level if most buyers look at the actual date ? I have always been told not to go backwards with my date of 2003, but why not as long as it's 5 years or more ? Hell I'm affraid to buy any animals being the trace back , trace forwards and soon probably a trace sideways some how. I'd like to buy a nice doe from time to time but have shied away the past several years with all the new bullcrap of tracebacks and all !As Jack knows I will buy semen and AI all my does but I'm affraid to buy an actual animal not wanting the hassel of a trace back ! Now I'm confussed as I live not to far from the Fleec farm where they've found CWD with no possible trace back just trace forwards as that farm has not purchased an animal in 20+ years ! Our biggest problem in my opinion is we simply don't fight back enough for unreal laws and rules slapped in our faces that make no sense what so ever . Yes we have some great people fight for us and our industry every day, but challenge some of these laws and ruling in court and I think we'd be pleasently surprised ! Enough is enough !! I would not go from 2002 to 2009 for a button buck ! Just my opinion !

I guess I have to be more specific.  I have been in the CWD program since 1999.  As many of you know I fell off my deck about a year ago and ended up with a bad concussion.  Result was for nine months I had a very hard time remembering things from day to day.

Well guess what I didn't do my herd inventory flat just forgot to do it..  Result was the State reduced me to a level four even though I had been in compliance for 14 years.  No notice I didn't do it only a punishment.  Point is what good was the starting date if I got no credit for those 14 years.  If all State really only keep us at a level of five what is the point of having a program starting date really other than to keep people from moving deer.  They have to have a maximum level so they can punish anyone for non compliance and take them to a level four.  The starting date really means nothing just look at the Flees case or how my State handled me.  The CWD program should only be five years period and we will grow as an industry.  As it is now look at how everyone is only buying from their starting date.  Don't take a rocket person to see we are hurting ourselves with this thinking by reducing trade amoung ourselves..  I guess this is really something Travis should put on the table to talk about and try to fix.

Good question, I read over all the paper work but can find no indication of how long I have been in the CWD program.  I will call the State tomorrow to see if my date has changed.

Jason the thing that I'd worry about in your case is you'd going backwards for a button buck ! You might end up with a great big wonderful breeder buck but you may also end up with a dud , you never know ! I'd say the risk of coming out ahead is to smaill to go from your now date of 2002 to 2009, Now if you were making a great deal on a huge more adult buck that you can see has turned out it MIGHT be worth the loss in CWD status , but your talking a button buck ! Hell that button buck may end up dead long befor he ever breeds anything or grows large enough to know for sure you got a great deal ! Just not worth the risk in my opinon , but it's just my opinion you have to decide !
