I am taking care of a fawn which is probably 3-4 months old. Was found wondering in a subdivision for several days. He is pretty skinny. He appeared to have circling disease and was treated. I feel he injured his left hind leg by circling so much and only sits on his haunches on that side. He will NOT take a bottle of any kind. I can give him a few syringes of milk, but fights that as well. I have sweet feed out for him, crushed alphalpha, alphalpha pellets and I feed him spinah, apples, grapes which he loves. He would eat leaves and grass originally but not much anymore. He also appears blind, but it seems to be improving. He has been treated with B12, thiamyne, selenium, vitamin A & D and antibiotics batril and pennicillin. What else should I do? Should I wrap the leg to help him stand up? I sooo want him to recover!! Thanking you in advance!

Patty are you a licensed rehabber? I know the fawns are cute and loveable but you need to make sure what your state laws are for taking in wild animals. If I were you I would find out who the closest wildlife rehabber is to you and take him there. They will have all the medicine and stuff he needs for him to have the best chance to survive. This would he the best advice I can give you....good luck!

If you think he has an injury to that left hind leg you may check it for swelling. If it is swelled you might try 2cc of Dexamethsone. It is a steroid and well help greatly with swelling and maybe some nerve damage. I might also try banamine for any pain it may be in. It might take several days to get that swelling down. As far as being blind B1 thiamine does wonders sometimes but you may have to treat for 3 or 4 days. Good luck Rick

How are his pellets? Make sure Patty that you give him plenty of water, I would give him some COB (Corn, Oat Barley, top dressed with Sweet Feed), some browse of course, and probiotics in his feed. Don't know about which antibiotics to use b/c we haven't figured out the injury, but when my fawn has a fractured tibia, the Vet gave her Draxxin and later Excede. Both are great. She was up and walking within a day. They are remarkably resilient and it seems that you already know this. Sounds like you know rehab, you can get a license at Walmart, and find a rehabber who has all the meds if you must too. Winter is coming, and you will have to keep the fawn confined somewhat if he is to overcome his injury. I had mine indoors for months... Good luck.

Scott I think he was trying to be sarcastic to my response ....I am learning to ignore certain stuff anymore......I was just trying to give some sound advice.......if she is taking this animal in illegally then we should be wise and steer her in the right direction.....oh well....just trying to help!!

Walmart sells wildlife breeder's licenses and of course one must apply for a rehabilitation license, but it's not a bad idea to have the breeder's license on hand while applying for the rehabber's license. No sarcasm intended, and please do not jump to conclusions about whether the animal was taken in illegally- you are not aware of her circumstances at all, so you should keep your comments to yourself.

Lanasvet,

First of all I am not going to argue with you. But i will say I did not jump to any conclusions......if you look you will see I asked her if she was a rehabber and told her to check on her state laws all of which is good sound advice that would not only protect her but also save her a lot of trouble in the long run if she is not a rehabber. As far as keeping my comments to myself.....I don't think this forum would be of much good if we all kept our comments to ourselves now would it. Patty I apologize if you are a rehabber as I was only trying to help with my advise. If you are i wish you the best with the fawn....however, if you are not I would definitely take my advice and find someone that is licesnsed to raise these animals. I wish you the best as well as the little fawn!

I clearly need to learn to ignore certain posts as well. I wish you a good, sunny day Dennis.

Actually here in Illinois anyplace that sells you a hunting licence can sell you a breeders license. You just can't purchase animals until your facility has been checked out. Rick

So what is the criteria for obtaining a WalMart wildlife breeder's license? What training do they require? How much do they charge for the license and what game warden do you know of that would consider it as a valid license? I'm not being funny or cute (although I am cute) I just have never heard of this before and when I went into my WalMart this afternoon and asked for this license they all looked at me and giggled.

It's a DNR issued permit in the State of Illinois. You buy it for ten bucks (pun intended, hehe) at the hunting license counter. I am not qualified to interpret legal provisions of the DNR's regulations governing deer rehabilitation. IL and IN issue wildlife breeders licenses as far as I know. You have to spend x number of hours working in a vet hospital or similar, also must have a facility of the proper size, fencing, etc. You are subject to inspections, etc. Walmart issues permits of all kinds in IL...

It's not a ''Walmart'' wildlife breeders license. It is an Illinois Wild Game and Bird Breeder license. and as Rick and Lana pointed out, they sell them anywhere in Illinois that sells licenses, and they do it via internet. No training required - never has been. (Side note - no training required to have kids, don't know why they would for deer.) To legally buy and possess deer in Illinois the license costs $10.50. To possess and to sell whitetail deer in Illinois it costs $20.50 for the class B license. And every game warden in the state will consider it a valid license, whether it's bought at Walmart via computer or at your home via computer. Our grocery store in town sells them. And game wardens have little to nothing to do with the deer farmer in Illinois. We are agriculture. One more side note: maybe they giggled at you because you're not as cute as you think. Just kidding Scott...trying to have a little fun here! :) Peace out!

Well I guess you learn something everyday. So you can get a license to raise and sell deer without having anyone inspect/approve your premisis? Wow....that would never fly here.

Yeah Scott, I don't think it 'should' fly here either. Illinois has a significant amount of lame laws, or lack thereof of good laws, and this happens to be one of them for sure.

Have you ever had your premises inspected by Child and Family Services?

The point Mark makes about people not having to have a license to raise children but needing one to raise animals really hit home with me.

What I find is that good parents are also really good livestock keepers/care givers/farmers.

Unfortunately, I think we scared away our original question "poster", I wish Scott that you would've offered her more advice. It saddens me to think that a baby deer is out there circling and not being cured of his/her health issue when you have such an expert-level of knowledge.

Funny you should mention that Lanasvet, I have! We used to be rehabbers and used our facility to educate underpriviledged kids (most of them in foster care) and before we were approved to host the kids 3 social workers came out and inspected the property.

As far as offering advise to someone who may be performing an illegal act, I have been cited in the past for aiding and abetting someone who had an illegal animal to which I gave advise in the care and keeping. I didn't know the animal was not legally owned and the judge through the case out, but I will always vett anyone who suddenly appears on this or any other internet forum before I give them my 2 cents.
