I have a doe fawn I am bottle feeding and she had the scours once before and it was treated with .50cc Baytril and Fawn Paste ( Probiotics ). It went away for a week and it came back now and it's real bad. We are trying everything as I am writing this. I am giving 1cc of Baytril twice a day along with the same amount of LS 50. I am not sure about how much more fawn paste I should give her. Yesterday I gave about a half a tube. I am feeding her half pasteurized goats milk and half Pedialyte about 5 oz per feeding 4 times a day. I am trying some pumpkin in some feedings also. her sours are liquid green. She is drinking water and eating some clover in her pen. If the poop smells...it's just a little. This has been going on for 2 days now and I would greatly appreciate some advise on how I am going about this and if something else would be more helpful.

One spoon full of canned pumpkin in the bottle will take care of it.

I will sure try this the next feeding...I wonder if I was not giving enough at one time. I was giving a tea spoon full when I did it.

1/2 ounce per day . I would divide this among the feedings equally. Start there before possibly increasing, but as always understand i am not a vet . This is used to lower cholesterol levels as well as scour benefits for humans.

Get her off milk and off clover for atleast 24 hours. I like to use the scour meds that you can get at tractor supply. It jells up the milk and will tighten her up fast. We had one like that and i treated her with neomycin and albon. 3 Days treatment did the trick!!!

We use absorb you can get it at tsc or atwoods mix in a bottle give it in place of milk a couple times then slowly work the mk back and should help

I will pick up some pectin today and with that amount to start I don't think it can hurt anything and it will probably help...Thanks!

I will try just the Pedialyte and for a while with the pumpkin and pectin along with the Baytril and LS 50. Any ideas on how much probiotic paste to give them if any?

I would give her a product called Electrolytes Plus it's made by Sav A Calf and would give her this INSTEAD of milk untill she firms up. The milk can irrate the gut and be a hinder in plugging her up!

BEST OF LUCK

Would the Pedialyte be as effective as the Electrolytes Plus? If or when she firms up...how should I introduce her to milk again?

I was told by several vets to pull them off the milk. The Electrolytes Plus kinda looks like Tang and we start all our fawns on the bottle with it first feeding........... The fawns actualy start out for us easier on this than milk. They really like the smell and the taste. If Pedialite is all you have available...............Do what you gotta do but thier are other products that work MUCH better!:)

Dave, I sent you an email of what I use. Works great for me. Mix in the milk at feeding time. Whole pumpkin in the can is always a good stand by product, once you slow her down

ok sounds like the Electrolytes Plus is what I'll try instead of pedialyte with this next feeding. I'm hoping they have it at Fleet Farm. After she firms up again how should I get her back on milk?

Dave, She takes to the bottle now ? She will take whatever is in the bottle. My wife used to give the older fawns even when they were weaned water in thier bottles just to keep the late ones company and so she didn't leave the older ones out!LOL

Yea she is drinking out of the bottle. About 5oz 4 times a day. I just didn't know how I should wean her back on the milk when she gets better. I didn't want to get her stomach upset again. That's funny that your wife didn't want the older weaned fawns to be left out :)

I used Albon when one would get loose, also put probiotic's in there bottle. When I started doing this the problem's went away but would come back later. Then I went to red cap, used Albon first 3 or 4 day's and probiotic's in every bottle from the start to finish of bottle feeding. When I started doing that never had a one have any trouble's at all.

Dave,

As you can see everyone has a different method to stopping the runs. You need to slow down and stop giving her everything under the sun in a few days period of time. Her system has no idea what all the different things are that you are giving.

Also if you have an issue in MN it is most likely completely different than the ones I may have here in PA. At least from a bacterial perspective.

#1--Identify the problem. Bacterial vs. Viral, over eating, etc.

#2--Fecal test. This is the most important thing. Now that she has been treated with a variety of things this is difficult.

#3--Many times when they have the runs just keeping them hydrated is good and it helps them to purge out the bad stuff.

Good Luck
