We are due for our testing. I was wanting to run the does thru the chute to save $$$ but with them being pregnant i presume that a very bad idea now this far along. My dilemma is test now or test after fawning. If i test now i only have to test  3 bucks and 12 does. If i wait until later i will have to test an additional 9 yrling bucks and 4 yrling does

Is it cheaper to knock down the 15 now and test or wait and run 12 does through the chute and knock down the 9 bucks

Now that i see this in writing...knock em down now and test the 15 lol

BUT..they out of blood tests

UUUGH

Our test date is March 1 and for many years we would dart all the deer that needed tested, including the pregnant does, and we always did it by the end of March because of the does. We never had a problem except one case of toxemia that may or may not have been due to the testing stress. We now test through the chute and I agree it is a little late for the pregnant does. Having said that though, if it was me, I believe I would consult our Vet and unless he said otherwise, I would run them through the chute immediately, before it gets any later. I think you can still draw blood and they will store it until they get the test kits. You will be quarantined until they can run the test, but this time of year that shouldn't be a problem. With that number of deer you should be able to run them through quickly enough that the stress should be minimal. I would run the pregnant does thru first and get them away from the handler asap. Hopefully, someone else on here has more insight. Meanwhile, good luck.

I would consider what Steve said. If you wait until after they fawn then you have to worry about rupturing the utter on the does and the velvet antler on the bucks... No real safe options this time of year... Like Steve said on the blood test, they will hold the blood until the test kits become available (at least that's what I read somewhere)..

Good luck...

If you have your doe in the handler this close to fawning I would vaccinate. It's the best time to get a immunity to the fawns. Hope you have cool weather. I would try for an early morning or late evening ASAP. I would give 3cc of Resflor to each of them in the muscle. Excellent input from Steve and Barry.

Good luck

I'm just not comfortable running them through the chute but you guys have been doing this a lot longer than I. Testing is due in July so it either NOW or Oct..3 months before or after. True numbers would be 15 now or 28 in fall. If i can run thru the chute tho only have to knock down 4 vs possible 13 in the fall. Trying to get a hold of the vet. But i really think you guys know more than he would.

I didn't know your test date was in July when I responded first. I assumed it was April or May. I would definitely use the 90 day window & wait till fall. It will be around $30 dollars per deer to run through the handler for TB and brucellosis blood testing. I did my 93 adults in March and I was charged around $25 per deer for TB and brucellosis test together.i don't think the difference in dollars in doing it now vs.fall is worth the risk of antler damage and health risk to unborn if doing it now vs. $390approx. for 13 more. Wait

Rick,

I too thought your date was due now, that does change the way you might look at things. I guess you have the option of waiting till the bucks shed their velvet and the fawns are weaned from the does. We tested last fall in Sept/Oct and ran most all throught the chute, only knocked down a few we wanted to score. We did the skin test on the does and blood on the bucks, worked good for us.

Did testing for a fella couple years ago, his back was against the wall on time, money was a factor and did it in april.  He used rompun

and did probably 12. He lost one doe I think and he had major problems with fawns, lost some early and a few born dead.   That's why planning is so important and we all know what kind of weather there was this year and I'm sure most people did a little later than they would have originally planned.

Myself I would not put a doe out this late unless it is an emergency and really getting late to run them thru the chute unless they bred second time round .  Bucks are growing now and you will screw up their nobs running in the chute now and might screw them up growing doing either at this point.  If they are all yearlings then it may not matter so much.

We couldn't have tested any earlier due to the weather and work needing to be done on our handling facility . We will be testing Monday afternoon on 15 buck and around 40 does wish me luck. We will be giving them b12 and Bamimine. what else do you think would help out these does this late.

thanks Ed

We decided to wait until fall. Just dont think the cost savings is worth the risk on the deer. So my next decison is rompam or bam...KIDDING LOL. As always thanks for your input guys

It's really too bad that there can't be some kind of a waiver in some of these cases. What difference could it possibly make if these herds were tested in Sept. vs now, as long as no deer left or entered the herd. There should be exemptions available for different circumstances if for no other reason than the health of the animals involved...

I don't how other states are, our state gives us three months on either side of our date . We wanted to do ours at the end of January or first ofFebruary but the weather was too bad and too much snow on the ground to get gates opened. Our anniversary date is in March. It's hard to coordinate between bad weather and working, when you need extra people to help you do it.

Ed,

Are you doing the skin test or blood test? Either way I would give a Resflor(nuflor gold & bamimine mix 50/50)shot 3-5 cc for adults in the muscle. If you are skin testing give them a second one when reading test. I assume you'll be having your Dvm check and record every fawn as well. I would give them 3cc in the muscle as well. They should be nearing 1 year old. The bamimine will mildly sedate the fawns and help them and the adults recover from the stress associated with handling/testing which is very hard on the immune system.I assume you read the words of warning in the prior post. It's not the best situation for you. If your Dvm is willing I would do it at night through a handler. They will be much calmer.

Good luck

If the blood test isn't available now I would call Shelly BOAH and see if they would let you wait till fall. You will be quarantined until then but it' would be worth it

good news I don't have to do my test we change our date back to  our old date of testing and that was not up until nov. of 2014 and if gives us until then to do it . Boy did I miss that bullet . thanks for all the replys

Ed,

Great news for you. This fall don't give Resflor until after blood is drawn. When doing the skin test you are not supposed to technically give anything. Your situation this spring was complicated. I was trying to save you from.........
