I have my doe pen attached to my fawn pen with a two foot gate seperating the two, so the does can jump into the fawn pen. I had four does fawn today, i left the fawns on their mom fo a long time. Then i took and tagged them, then put them in the fawn pen so the moms could jump in and take care of them. But when they go into the fawn pen ,they just lick and sniff around on the fawn then jump back out grunting. They are not staying and feeding them. So i was just wondering if this is normal and needs more time or if i should start bottle feeding.

Any reason why they are separated ? I would put them in the pen together. A lot of times the Fawns walks up to the mom when its hungry .The Doe might forget about its Fawn. Did you do this last year ? ....

You might try this. We had a doe give birth to five fawns last year non of which where in good shape. We we had to pull three buck fawns. After getting one to recover in a few hours we returned him to his mother. The other two I kept in the house for about two weeks and started bottle feeding them. We then put them back in the same pen with the mother to continue bottle feeding and to our surprise within a week or so she took them back. What was awesome about this is they are tame enough to pet and we only had to bottle feed them for about 3 1/2 weeks total. I think the key is to leave a fawn on the doe so her milk doesn't dry up. You will also need does that are good surrogate mothers. We had multiple does that where feeding all the fawns. Believe me we will be doing this again this year.

do a search on here for imprinting that would be the best way to show u what i am trying to do

Sorry, for the mis-understanding .....I finally learn something new tonight about imprinting. My opionion towards your goal I would say is risky . Just keep in mind that some does are good mothers and some are bad.I think older does are better responsible mothers.I just hope your does are good mothers.Good Luck !!!

i dont know if it is going to work or not they made it sond good on here i was just wondering if sombody had done it before i am bottle feeding my texas tea and my climax fawns and if this dos not get any better i will be feeding the rest of them that is what i am still doing up watching to see if they are going to feed there fawns or not

they are all yearlings and 2 year olds .maybe that is the problem

Don't get me wrong .....I would love to save time and money on bottle raising...the way your trying to do it . But bottle raising fawns last year was a nightmare for me ... I just did have time and i had to hire two guys to bottle raise them . I turned them lose with other penned deer after and some went back to being like others wild again. Waste of time and money . This year im just gonna give them thier vaccinations and tag them . If i have some minitures , i have a lady that will bottle raise them .

If you own a few deer , I wouldn't risk it. If you have 20 or more ... Its probably good to give it a try ... If you see that they are getting skinny ... Bottle raise them or feed them with a milk syringe.

well all is going well the does are jumping in and taking care of their fawns not only is it working it is working well when one fawn cries not only does its mom come running but several does come running and their not only letting their fawns nurse but they are leiting other fawns nurse to. so it is almost like they are helping each other out and were it is a small pen that the fawns are in i can go out and mess with the fawns to make them tame it seems to be working out when i go in the pen the fawns follow me around so all is well for now
