thank you for the info are deer have not been shedding till late march. In your opinion do you think this will be safe to force are deer in December.

I hope so because this would be great if we can. thanks again

We haven't done this and won't. What are long term effects? You are messing with hormones and not sure this is a good idea. Once the rut has past the bucks are not nearly as aggressive and most fighting stops anyway. What is the advantage then? Just don't think it is a good idea to mess with mother nature.

I agree with Wild Rivers

I know a few guys that did it in October. They say there is no fighting at all and they start growing out much earlier than normal. I have no plans or doing it, just posing what I have heard.

We used a similar drug one year on one buck. We won't use it again. His antlers the following year suffered the consequences.

thanks to all of you I was a little afraid of this too, I was told this from a farmer in Ohio but never got the full details from him. We are expanding the farm now and hope I will be able to separate the bucks that I want to shed natural and not have to do this. I will post more info after I talk back to the farmer in Ohio again, also I do know that even after the rut big antlered bucks left in the same pen together can still kill each other don't know why but know this because I know a person this year that lost one in February 4 left together he did loose his horns already and one had lost one horn and the other 2 had both still on. anyway thanks again....reed remraf

Being a PROGESTERONE wouldn't the same drug we use to get the does in heat work? I think all you are doing is reducing male hormones which causes the bucks to do just what nature does which is reduce the male hormones naturally in winter and antlers fall out. Just asking as I cut all antlers in Aug/Sept and I have not had one without antlers kill another.

Jack, It is my understanding the drug Roxy Progesterone you would give 2cc but.......But not after Feb 1st. It is supposed to be the same Drug administered to boys in group homes to keep their Testosterone in check and sexual aggression ........Makes sense ....I guess?

But have been told by folks who have used it.......................it CAN have an effect on the following years antler growth!

Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.....................I would not use it but to each his own!

Thanks Wayne good information. So if you can't use it till after Feb 1 what good will this drug do for the buck deer at that time as most would have killed a deer before that? I also wouldn't use it myself as just cutting them off in August works for me.

Not sure if it is the same drug but I talked to a farmer that darted buck's in early Oct. he told me they droped antlers two week's later. I thought it sounded like a good idea and much cheaper that sedating and cutting them off. He didnt mentoin anything about them not growing out good the next year, I will have to ask him about that.

great let us know what you find out and Im asking the other farmer that told me about it also and will post with answer thanks.

Gosh I don't think I'd ever do something like this unless it could be done before the rut, which would have to be by mid October at the latest here . I'm thinking I test the deer way to much and treat them for something or another enough so why would I want to dart them again for something if it didn't help before the rut ? I try to sell all shooter bucks when they are 3 and they don't seem to fight much at 2 . Just an opinion !

The antler cycle is controlled by day length & its effect on the hormone cycle.

The growth ,hardening & casting is all controlled by hormones. I can't see how a small advantage in management could justify the use of these drugs.

I'm even amazed that it would be considered.

Cheers Sharkey

Edit. Oh no. I'm not suggesting that folks keep their deer in dark houses like battery hens either to manipulate the antler cycle.

Please don't do it.

Jack, I was told that it should NOT be used after Feb 1st...............I would not use it ......But LOTS of folks ARE using it trying to get that little extra edge.........Folks always seem to be looking for?

Best of luck

Wayne,

Sure would be nice if I could read. I had my eye lens replaced in both eyes and thought I could see as good as I did in my thirties. But really I sure can see fine and don't need glasses for distance looking just cheater glasses for up close guess I should have used them.

I will be needing a fogger from you soon so set one aside for me with good stuff to kill bugs. Thanks.

update I talked to the farmer that told me about the drop antler drug, he said he has not used it and just heard of it himself, I told him it did not sound to good of what Im hearing. He told me he will leave his 1 yrs in pen together and leave horns on and he has more then one feeding and drinking spot. the 1.5 + deer he will cut horns, and the 300+ bucks that he wants to keep to shed natural he will put into pen with a doe or two to breed or to keep them from being alone. and they drop on their own. Im sure he will not use after he reads what all has been said here. and Im sure if he had a gaint yearling like jumbo 112 he would not put it in with others with hard antlers. I know if I did I would have the pen attached to my house!!!:) anyway to each his own on this subject thanks to all for info.

I have 5 deer that have not shed yet and I am getting alittle worried! What is the latest some of you had your deer shed? 4 are yearlings one coming 3 yr old JIM
