I am a rehabber with an hbc fawn who for all intents and purposes should be euthanized but if not for her beautiful personality and wicked drive to live. I would normally agree but my gut says I have to keep trying.
She eats like a horse and tries to walk but can't. She may have other injuries but so far no vets will even talk about anything other than euthanasia. I have several long term options for her if I can get her past this so please only reply with additional suggestions. I am fully aware of how hopeless this case is. I'm looking for other things to try first.
She lost her left foot in the accident but responded well to amputation and was recovering nicely until another injury got abscessed. She is on 250mg oral cephalexin bid and is not tolerating it well. The infection has improved. Im hot compressing the infected wound and flushing with betadine every two hours. The amputation site is healing nicely but it's difficult to tell what else could be going on without x-rays. She seems like she'll adapt to disability if given the right home life.
She has stopped eating and is sleeping most of the day. She still drinks water and has good stools. My questions are:
Are there things I can give her that will help with the side effects of the antibiotic?
Can I tube feed her?
Has anyone had similar experiences with cephalexin? Will it pass?
What else can I do to manage her pain and facilitate recovery.
