Normal Body Temperature for fawns ?

According to my vet, normal temp. is 101.1. For her fever I would give 3/10 cc. of Banamine. It should bring the fever right back to normal within a couple hours. Good luck with her.

Yeah Jack.....she is obviously not feeling well....you have seen enough fawns to know when one does not look well......don't second guess yourself....you know how a healthy fawns looks and acts........give her some banamine as goldstar said above and see if that gets her back to normal.........

Bill - if you have a low temp, you probably have a bacterial infection of some sort. Low temp is from all of the fawns energy going to fight the infection and not to regulating body temp. Banamine helps in terms of discomfort from the illness, but will not help restore the temp to normal. Heating pads work great for us, along with warm fluids and antibiotic chosen based on other symptoms. Call if you need to.



Normal temp in fawns can vary from 100 - 103. Perfectly normal in a mature deer is 101.5. Fawns will vary based on ambient temperature, cloud cover vs. sunshine, sleeping vs. up moving around, etc......as they aren't fully able to regulate just yet, especially really little ones. Best thing is to check a few fawns in your pen for reference, before deciding if a temp is high or low. They might all be 102.1, give or take a few tenths, therefore normal for that particular moment in time within the herd.

Randall owner of Waldrep Whitetail Farm here in Alabama. We had a fawn born last night that we found this morning to tag.  When we located the buck fawn he was laying head down and ants were biting him around his eyes and rectum.  We clean him up, removed all the ants, and  checked his temp which was 95.3.  We pulled him from mom and gave him colostrum with a syringe and got him on a heating pad. Applied neosporin to the ant bites.  We have gotten him to take about 25ml from 9 am to 12 noon.  We gave him 25cc Draxin, .25cc Baytril, and 1/2ml of B12.  His temp is up to 101 now. I really don't want to tube him if I don't absolutely have to. Am I missing anything or do you have any suggestions for things that would work better?

Randall..If he is not eating you will HAVE to tube feed him. Get him back to alive  and well and you can try to put him back on mom. If she doesn't take him back you will have to bottle feed but i'd be she'll take him

Did you give any fawn paste? what is your standard fawn protocol?

I was all excited to say that Robbie was back!!!  Then i realized her post was from 2010 5 years ago... my how time flies.

Robbie is a great lady....still talk to her from time to time. I blame her for getting me addicted to this industry LOL

I would like to add that people need to stick to proper dosages.  Banamine is 0.1cc/10 lbs, or 1cc/100lbs.  Banamine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammitory and can do kidney damage when overdosed.  if the fawn weighed 15 lbs it should get 0.15cc to appropriately dose you should get some TB syringes to treat fawns.  Please use medications close to recommended amounts..  You dont want to cure the disease and kill the patient doing it.
