Oklahoma farmer needs help

I have a 3 year old doe with bulging eyes. We are in central Oklahoma and this time of year, September, we go through Blue Tongue and EHD. WE have had no confirmed cases in the area of either one that I know of this year. We first noticed her bulging eyes on 9/18. I have been darting her with draxin and banamine. She has no blood or saliva discharge from her nose or mouth. She gets around good but has problems seeing due to the swelling. I am looking for some answers. Is this a sign of Blue Tongue or something else. If it was EHD she would be gone already. Plase help, this is a serious problem, no smart remarks please. Rick (405) 826-6601

Rick this is Bobby Olguin i live just a few miles from you and i had one doe die 3 weeks ago due to EHD. She was fine one day and on her death bed the next. Hope you get everything turned around.

bless her heart, she looks like she is in pain......gotta be sensitive to light.. i hope you find out soon and can get it fixed...

wow what ashsame Rick.......I searched and searched the internet for something and had no luck........definitly has to be some sort of infection you would think.....I hope someone on here has the answers for you........Good Luck!!

I done the same thing on the internet for the past few days. I have searched deer, goats ect. and found nothing with this kind of eye problem or symptom. I do have calls into vets. and waiting a response.

Have you looked into conjunctivitis. It might be a severe case. Perhaps a severe infection of the inner eyelid. I think they usually treat it with pen G. Rick

She was fine one day and the next she was foaming at the mouth and very letargic i gave her meds by hand and she is not even a 20 footer. She was dead by that same evening

Wow is right. It doesn't even seem like it should be physically possible for that. I think those pictures will give me nightmares. Good luck, and let us know what you find.

wow...... after those pic's I wouldn't rule out demon possession or zombie attack this is going to be a learning experience for us all

Thanks guys I got some good information but not sure what type of diesease, virus or sickness Im dealing with. I knocked her down this afternoon and gave her Dexasone, Banimine, Vit.B complex, and eye wash I had already hit her earlier in the morning with Draxin. I was going to give penicillin but it was not recomended with the Dexasone. I checked her for any trauma and checked inside her mouth for any signs of soars or discolor and found none. She is coming around now and we will keep our fingers crossed.

This would be a real guess but there is a weed that ties up iodine. Loss of iodine can cause a problem with the thyroid gland. Does she have an enlarged thyroid gland that you can feel? The weed is called flix weed. And it can cause still births too. It is found in early cutting alfalfa mostly. I would give her some iodine and see if it helps. 2-3cc orally of 7% tincture of iodine is what I would try for 3-4 days. I hope this helps

Wow! certainly never seen anything like that before. We've seen a bulging eye from antler infections before, but never both eyes and the eyelids weren't swollen and red. After looking closer, I don't think the eyes are bulging that much, mostly swollen eyelids. Also if there was that much swelling in the head I think she would have balance issues. Just another guess here, but we sometimes get deer with allergies that cause their lower eyelid to get a little puffy and red. Maybe this is an extreme case. If the antibiotics don't work you might try an antihystamine.

Well things went down hill this afternoon(9-23-10). This morning she was up moving around and the swelling had seem to have gone down some. She was eating and drinking and browsing on grass as of nothing was wrong. I left and came back around 3:30 pm and found her down and could not get up. I had to put her down so I did. I took her up to OSU to their facility to have her tested to find out what we all would like to know was causing this. I will not know anything for a few days. Thankyou
