Predator fencing and hot wire?

Hi everyone! I am getting into this wonderful business and I am excited about starting my pens this summer. I have a good number of coyote in the area and won't to know from some experienced farmers if they would recommend a strand of hot wire around my pens or not. How far from the fence should the hot wire be? And what wire can be used on a tight budget for predator fencing. Thanks to all who respond.

We just lay 36" hog wire flat on the ground on the outside and attach it to the bottom of the deer fence with hog rings. Just make sure you don't plan on making your pens bigger on that side because it is really hard to pull it up with all the grass growing thru it(know from experience)

Split-Hoof, LJ has a good idea since they will dig, just make sure it is a heavy galvanized wire or it will rust fast. We sell some items that may be of interest to you on our web page, www.bfproducts.com or you can call me at (717) 238-7715 and ask for Henry. Check out our NightGuard item and Grassprotecta as well

We run four hot wires about six inches out from our deer fence on long insulators. The first wire from the ground is six inches up. Then the rest are spaced twelve inchs. Running a 12000 volt charger. We got coyotes and bears that are a pain around here.

I have seen both coyotes and fox climb up and over a fence. Not in person but on video tape. If your have concerns about coyotes I would use both a bottom skirt and a hot wire.

Tundra ridge's idea would probaly be the cheapest route and would work just fine.

Sorry! One more question. On my hot wires, i will be useing cresote polls throughout. Would I attatch the hot wores to the polls themself or make it free standing a few feet away?

Tundra, we are also located in PA and I believe our prices are better then Kencove, check out our web page but let me know if we are higher then Kencove and I am sure we can beat them, if not I will tell you I cannot.

we have a solar fencer, it also uses a 12 volt car battery that it charges to use at night, it has enough power for 7 miles of wire

I had a solar fencer on mine but the battery no longer charged after I had it for a year. I now went to a plug in model, I think they are more reliable.

Plug in units by far more effective and reliable, and cheaper than the solar units. You can purchase a 13,000 volt plug in unit good for 100 miles of wire for about $200 at Tractor Supply. Then you can run 12 ga. insulated wire as far as you like to get to your pens without loss of power as long as it's under 100 miles!

I like the Goldin Marlin myself. I have a predator wire and a solar charger but the goldin marlin is the best. A dead coyote will not harm your deer.

dbank, it's fly bait that can be purchased at any feed store. Mixed with food coyotes love will do the trick. Be carefull, also kills anything else that finds it.

We had problems untill we put down 36 hog wire flat on the outside. Stopped problem. Foxes still climb through. We attached with hog rings and put on the third horizonal wire from the bottom. This allowed us to space hog rings about every 10 inches.
