Quarantine pen

What I am wondering is how many have a quarantine pen with one or two deer in it that are test subjects...



We do but never a single deer unless its a fawn we are bottle raising that we feel has something contagious. In our breeder pen we have a pen completely shadeclothed for sick/crazy/stupid deer.



Does anybody put new deer in a separate pen and if so do you routinely worm...Corid...Sulmet???



If its more than one coming from a new place we'll leave em together in a pen for a few days and let them adjust to us and figure out which group of deer they'll fit best with(if we have the room at that time). Any deer that comes here has to be wormed before it gets on the trailer. Ive learned the hard way its best to go observe the deer youre bringing in before you actually get them if you have the chance, even then a "calm gentle" deer on one ranch doesnt mean it'll be the same on yours...... Just this morning we moved a doe to a new pen with 4 bottle raised bucks because the does in the pen with her have just recently started picking on her and chasing her. They all seemed to be fine until some started dropping so we moved her for fear that when she drops her fawns they'll be killed by another doe. We didnt dart, just walked her out and she seemed more than eager to be out of there.... That group had been together almost six months without a problem.



We just make sure new deer have been wormed and treated with a low dose antibiotic before they come here and somewhere in the process of loading/darting you'll see a stool sample somewhere or get a look to check for scours. Be sure of where they come from regardless of genetics is probly the most valuable thing you can do..
