Figure these are in Kilograms paid for with NZ dollars

A kilogram is 2.20462 lbs

A US dollar is worth 1.4406 NZ dollars So

Super A Elk ( which well cut North American antler can be) is $110/kilo divided by 2.20462 or $49.895 NZ dollars per lb.

that in turn is divided by 1.4406 and equals $34.64 US dollars per lb.

A very good price for these recent years.

North American velvet will of couse be downgraded due to CWD and everything else the Orient can think of, but still we might get $100NZ per Kg which is $31!

GOOD NEWS FOR THE ELK INDUSTRY. :D

It very good news. I just hope it can stay there for more than 1 year. If it stayed there it would mean get things for the elk industry. It would drive all prices up where they belong. Thank for the news.

AS of March 2, 2010 NZ$/kg

Grade B $105-BS

Grade C $101-CS

This is were most US cut velvet would fall

$100NZ per Kg = $45.35US per lb. or $31.93US per lb.

The velvet antler market. There are numerous products made form the sales of velvet antlers worldwide. It's just another outlet for our industry as a whole. Most producers of velvet antler are raising elk and red deer because of the size and weight of the antlers produced. I'm not an expert on the velvet antler market by any means so maybe one of the guys/girls here can shed more light on the subject.

o.k thanks,

The best it been for years.

No countries in the EU are allowed to velvet anymore, as they were doing it without pain relief,& wouldn't adapt ,gone.

In NZ dairy has returned more than deer in the last decade,so their herd has been dramaticaly reduced (cows behind deer fence).

Lower supply & an increased intrest in traditional chinese medicine ,has seen prices move to profit levels instead of just covering cost.

Every year the goal posts change as to what the buyers want.Having said that the prefered species appear to be sika, red & elk (it could be sambar & rusa next year.Who knows?).Not many here are processing good young stags, people are buying ,not selling.

Cheers Sharkey

You could try.I've never heard of it.Talk to some traditional chinese medicine practitioners local to you, they could tell you if has value. We don't keep those species here.Providing them with a sample couldn't hurt.Take care with the deer, they require pain relief. Cheers Sharkey
