We've got a local guy who takes care of the medical aspect of our deer for the most part, but as I gain more and more experience managing the farm, I'm being given more responsibilities...which I actually don't mind at all because I like to make sure things are done right.

So those of you who know your stuff... educate me (and anyone else using the search function down the road...).

When a fawn is born, what vaccinations do they need to receive and when should it be administered, how often, what's the injection called, etc?

If anyone has a chart with all that info, that'd be great...but I'll take whatever info I can get. Thank you much!

I give

3cc Bar Guard oral asap Let them drink some colostrum then within 6 hours is best

1/2cc Bo-Se Sub Q

3cc C&D Antitoxin Sub Q Re vaccinate with same in 14 days

2 1/2 cc Poly Serum Sub Q

2 weeks old

1/4 CC Fusogard Sub Q Re vaccinate at 4 weeks

12 weeks

5 cc Triangle 9

2cc Covexin 8

2 cc Fusogard

16 weeks

5 cc triangle 9

2 cc Covexin 8

I was going to add EHD, but it was new to the people around here and I wanted to see if it was needed...Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but I always wonder when to stop...Do I need West Nile ect...the list goes on...deer being deer you can only do so much to protect them ...without the danger of killing or hurting them each time.

Hope that helps???

This was from an old post, if you type vaccinations in the search bar you can bring up other people plans on their farms.

Best of Luck!!

I talked with one of our local whitetail guys today... we lost a buck to pneumonia today and another one was dying of it as well...treated it with Draxxin but it was so far gone we don't think it'll help...

Anywho...

I asked him what his recommendations were and he said for our area...

Bovine Equalizer 3cc orally within 12 hours of birth if possible (skip if 12 hours has passed)

Clostridium CDNT (or is that C&D?) 2cc sub q

Clostridium A 2cc sub q

Bo-Se 1/2cc sub q

Any opinions on that?

I ended up purchasing a bunch of stuff...felt like blowing the boss' money tonight...lol

Ordered:

Clostridium Perf. C&D

Clostridium Perf. A

Poly Serum

Covexin 8

Tylosin 200 (not for a vaccine... seen it recommended to help out with the runs and other issues so I figured it'd be a good thing to keep handy)

I'll have to talk to the vet regarding Bo-Se since it's apparently Rx only...and at the price Draxxin is, I'm assuming it is as well.

Draxxin is Rx only. Tylosin is an antibiotic that works mainly against gram positive bacteria. Somewhere on these boards there's a list of basic meds to keep on hand. That might give you more ideas for what to keep on hand.

Thanks, I'll have to look that up...I thought I knew a lot about deer, but I come to realize, I'm still just a young grasshoppa.

I figured Draxxin wasn't cheap... our guy who brought some over today said it runs him $4/cc...at that price, I figured it's some pretty powerful stuff.

Dr.Wagners booklets on deer care can be ordered on line it covers alot of important topics.I have owned them for a while now. They come in handy.

Yeah...the Draxxin will be used mainly for treatment of pneumonia which we've lost a few bucks to over the past couple years (two just within the past week...OUCH). I dropped by our local vet today and they're going to see if they can order me some Bo-Se and Draxxin. I think my boss is going to kill me when he sees what they bill him for on the Draxxin...LOL

Sorry to hear about the loss of the bucks. I think Draxxin is the most expensive antibiotic I've seen used on a regular basis. But I think I'd rather pay for it and save an animal.

Yeah... I'd rather spend $500-1000 on Draxxin than continue losing bucks that normally sell for anywhere between $1500 and $5000. Seems like it'll pay itself off pretty quickly.
