4/8/09 Rick Saatela’s USSA fishing trip in TX.

Well I met Rick, his Mom and Dad at my hotel in Conroe TX this morning for a day of fishing and laughs on Lake Conroe. When their cab pulled up Rick was grinning from ear to ear and he was definitely ready to go get on the water and get after some TX Bass. He had to stop and take a few pictures of the bass boat first and then we were off to the lake where some members of the Seven Coves Bass Club were waiting for us. After a few minutes of meeting everyone and the club making Rick an honorary member we all set out to get Rick on some fish. After a while Rick hooked into a very nice 4 and ½ pounder but she came off right at the boat but several of us saw how big she was. Then after a long run over a very choppy main lake we did some sight fishing where Rick learned some new tactics from Seven Coves Members and then back on the rough water for a short run back to where we started at Stow-A–Way Marina where Rick was able to put a few nice ones in the boat, I also have to say Mom caught 4 as well, nice job Mom..

I would like to say that Rick is one of the nicest young men you could ever hope to meet, and he is one heck of a fisherman. I am very surprised that some of the big outfits up north are not picking him up and sponsoring him in his Walleye fishing…Rick, Mom and Dad and I parted company late that evening but we parted as family. We will be staying in touch and we will be fishing again very soon at the annual USSA event in July and then hopefully again in June when he returns to Houston for some surgery, schedules permitting.

A great big thanks to Aaron Bonin and the Seven Coves Bass Club as follows Matt Russell, Tracy Pace, Kirk Gordon , Jeff Vawter, Terry Reed, Shelley Bonin and we also want to thank Mr. Ron Kost for arranging with Texas Parks and Wildlife for donating their day permits and Stow-A-Way Marina allowing us to use there wonderful facilities.

Rick, Mary Jo and Mike thank you so much, that was a great day and I was honored to be a small part of it. Rick remember once a fishin’ buddy – always a fishin’ buddy.

God Bless,

Perry Powell

VP of USSA

a Champion would have smoothed out that rough ride for Rick

Just kidding great that you were able to take him fishing,

Hey Rick,

Thank you for calling me and letting me know you are back in the hospital. We will all pray that your pain lessens and you can return home soon.

In response to your email question-"Once a USSA Kid-always a USSA kid"! USSA isn't just a charity but also a big family!

God bless you darling! : )

Brigid,

I have been talking with Rick and his Mom and I have something exciting for Rick this week end. I am going to take him to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic as a guest of Toyota and the Professional Anglers Association. He will get to meet 60 of the top Pro's in the country including Ken Van Dam the Angler of the Year. He is going to have a great time as the VIP of the day. Pictures and story to follow.
