Wuld be interested to know what sort of results anyone is having with sexed semen doing the AI in the chute, not lap. How was the semen packed?

Wild rivers, that is a great question , I wa wondering the same thing. I hope we get some responses.

Wild rivers, I hope we get some honorable guys to step up and share their success and even lack of success . I hope your comment won't prove correct.

Just my opinion, I don't think that much sexed semen has been used as of yet. We will be using some of our sexed semen from Dream Rolex for the first time this year. Anybody looking for some sexed semen from a huge buck let me know.

I talked to someone that said you are more apt to have singles and a lower conception rate. This person also said that they were not sure that it is worth the added expense. Its 7k just for the lab expense not to mention the cost of collection and expense of AIing the doe. The sexing process is very, very hard on the sperm. With most bucks you have to use the whole straw and cant split it. It also has to be shipped over night to the lab to be processed. If you take whitetail heartbeat there is a lengthy article on the process of sexing semen. I think it was in the recent one.

Myself, I think sexed semen is a bad thing for our industry. I think to a point the more we try to improve our ways we hurt ourselves. Sexed semen could lead to an overload of bucks and bring down prices. It would help some now but maybe hurt us all in the end!

We used sexed semen once several years ago when it was first being tried. We did not have good results and was wondering if things had improved. The cattle industry uses it all the time. It has to be cost effective and the results have to be there. We would all like to produce more bucks with fewer does but it can't cost more than raising them conventional methods.

I guess as long as there under 600 it doesn't "hurt the industry"?

Nope i think if we listen to the ones that do that talking it would be anything that has any kind of non-typical points coming of the main beam. Ya know kinda like the 100 to 150 inch bucks they might see out in the wild. If we have anything bigger on the inside than they would ever see on the outside, They would have a problem!! Oh Well, Cant make everyone happy!!

I have mixed feelings on the sexed ...have heard mixed results don't know what to believe reguarding results although I've had request for sexed semen still not sure about it.

RLA feel free to stop in next year maybe we can make your dream come true and have that 600" buck in hard antler for ya.

lol ,damn if i could grow a 600 inch buck i wouldnt care if he's in velvet or hard horn its not like i would sell him as a shooter ,you have some great bucks harry i would love to have any of them at my house David Westbrook

To see a 600" buck , first you have to go to where they are grown..That place IS Harry Strawsers farm!! It's like hunting..You have to go where the big bucks are....PENNSYLVANIA !!!!

In the cattle industry sexed semen is being used a bit but the conception is somewhat lower . The big difference is that cow can be bred again in a month and bred over and over until she's pregnant. In the deer industry we usually only have the one breeding, the one chance verses year around breeding in the dairy industry . Just an opinion

I wonder if it coss the same to have it broke down? Dairy semen and deer semen!!

Since we have not had a plethora of positive responds concerning the use of sexed semen maybe it is safe to assume that most experiences with sexed semen has been marginal to poor in desired results. Historically, the members of this forum a bee quick and willing to share their success and not as willing to share their non-success. Since more and more deerfarmers are selling sexed semen is suppose the old livestock axiom of "let the buyer beware" applies here.

One other point that seems to point toward poor results is that the cost of a straw of sexed semen is less expensive than a regular semen straw from the same buck while the processing and production fee is quadruple the cost. If it were extremely successful in producing it's desired results then logically it would cost more than a regular semen straw from the same buck .
