I have a 3 yr old doe that birthed a single fawn on June 11th. She is my jumpiest doe, so at 2 days old I took the doe fawn to bottle raise it.

Last Thursday, 10 days after delivering the fawn, the doe appeared ill. She was walking humped over and very uncomfortable. I had never seen this before from any of my deer so,I watched her until Saturday morning with no improvement, so I darted her. On the inspection, I discovered that she must have an infection in her uterus, because she had yellow discharge. I admistered 7 cc of Baytril, a liberal amount of probios and reversed her.

The next couple days she seemed more alert and starting to walk better, but have only seen her drink, not eat.

This morning she was laying in her normal spot but looked wet under her rearend. I made her get up to discover that she now has blood oozing from her ******l area.

What do I do now?

Baytril is for respiratory infections. I'd give her a nice shot of Draxxin immediately, and try to flush her out with antibiotic solution. Contact: Scott Heinrich on this forum or [email protected] immediately. You're gonna have to do something immediately! Good luck Jack.

Jack, It sounds like she may not have cleaned out after giving birth and should have a vet check her. She may need a shot of Lutalyse to clean her out ....................But I would get her checked ASAP!

Good Luck

I agree on the lutalyse, that will get her cleaned out. The baytril will help with infection.

We had a doe here that was like that. The vet was here for another reason and gave the doe 10cc of penicillin. She was fine in a couple of days and have had no issues since.

I have read this from Dr. Jay on these boards: Yes it is alright to give the antibiotics if she is nursing. If she is tame enough you may want to infuse her uterus with 20cc of oxytetracycline. She may have had a retained placenta or just a metritis (uterine infection) from fawning. Good luck
