Smelly gray diarrhea spreading in rehab fawns

Hello all! I’m new here but came because a good friend of mine who also rehabs fawns in Texas was getting good feedback. We deal with just about everything you can deal with but are always learning and improving.

I have a 4 week old fawn that is dying. Started off refusing bottles and is severely underweight. Soon after, diarrhea started. Now, the diarrhea has firmed a little but is gray and extremely stinky. Vet did a fecal that was negative for parasites. He suspects bacteria and says prognosis is poor. I quarantined this fawn, but two others now show symptoms and I’m worried. This guy is being tuned when he won’t eat, is getting LRS oral and sub q as needed, pumpkin, yogurt and probiotics, and a little cow colostrum here and there for added calories. Vet started on injectible terramycin for broad spectrum antibacterial coverage.

Thoughts?

If this fawn were mine, he would get 3cc of C&D Antitoxin sub Q and .25cc of Draxxin. You can also give activated charcoal orally as well. Just put a good bit on your finger and stick it in his gums like a big wad of chaw. On the following day I would give some fawn paste. At 4 weeks the fawn is to old and the stomach and digestive track have developed and the colostrum isn't going to be absorbed into the body like it should be when the fawn is born and up to 3 days old. also take the fawns temp. it should be anywhere from 101-102. If the temp gets below 96 the organs start to fail. Also a high temp means infection. you can give Banamine to help lower temp if it is elevated. If the fawns temp is low then get it on heating pad and let the Draxxin do it's job. I'm not a vet but that how I would treat that fawn if it were at my farm.

I’ve never had a fawn with grey, foul smelling poop. However, when a goat has grey, foul smelling poop, it can be linked to Salmonellosis. It is highly contagious and people can get it too. I don’t know how long it takes to show in fecal test.


I will say that recently my fawn did have Barber Pole worms. She refused food. Her poop was dark green and very loose. It smelled. She was going down hill fast. Her fecal showed a couple, but not many. My vet gave her a dose of Cydectin. She’s back to her old self now.
