I am looking for info on starting a new elk farm in SD. Who/where is the best place to start to get the regulations for fence and what permits are needed to have elk?

Roger, You can call the South Dakota animal industry board, 605-773-3321. The fence requirements are 8'. We still have a handful of elk ranchers here in the state and most if not all have dropped all testing. We now have the choice to not test anything as long as it is not transported out of state. Our SD state vet is Dustin Oedokoven who in my opinion is very cervid farmer friendly and has common sense when it comes to the cervid industry.

Thanks much. I will pass the number on to my co-worker at breakfast this morning. He has a ranch in SD and wants to have a few elk just for fun and eat the cows. Then sell any extra bulls to a hunt ranch. He talked about it on the flight over to Germany and again after we got here so I said I would ask on here for info since I don't know anything about elk or SD. Thanks again!

No problem Roger, What part of the state is his property located?

I never asked him where he was located. I gave him the phone number at breakfast though so thank you. Out of here I work with another crew so I don't think I will see him again this month. He has my email if he has questions. He might have said something about being like 2 hours from the Black Hills area but I might have that wrong. We talked about too many things crossing the North Atlantic to recall it all.
