Is it ok to just feed straight Red Cap milk to fawns?

I am just wondering if they will get enough of whatever they need from just straight milk?

I had my first doe fawn 3 days ago. It took her 26 hours to take the first bottle. but now she seems ok with it. Ive feed her 4 times( one day now) and each time she sucks down 5oz. But she still seems hungry to me.

any ideas guys? this is my first time bottle feeding

Thanks Tom

I use Ultra 24 Milk Replacer or Land of Lakes Multi Species with Red Cap have had 0 problems in 4 years.

Got caught with no replacer on hand this year and tried Red Cap straight and it was a battle to get em started.

If you use straight red cap, they will grow and be fine. I have raised 10 or more on only red cap. Now I started adding formula to my red cap.

Tom, I am new to bottle feeding aswell. Bottle feeding my first fawn now. Born saturday am. I took the fawn yesterday afternoon around 2 to start bottle feeding. Friends around me, also deer farmers, swear by red cap. So far, no problems its only been a little over 24 hours. But time will tell. I am also adding a little collostrum from jersey cows for the next week. Maybe a tablespoon full per feeding of 4 ounces. I also added fresh, black dirt, the kind that you would find under the leaves deep in a forrest, to the diet it is in a seperate container/bowl heard that helps in the bacteria aspect of things......

We add evaporated goats milk to our red cap as well as a milk replacer for the first few weeks. It has worked well. Everyone has their favorite replacer. We use La Belle milk/colostrum powder.

I have used red cap but alway's have added 1/2-3/4 cup milk replacer per gallon. I would want them to act like they are still hungry when they finish the bottle. I think it is better for them to still be a bit hungry than it is to over feed them. Another thing I alway's add probiotics to the first and last bottle of the day and Albon the first 4 day's. Have never had and problem's since I started adding probiotic's to the bottle.

I am also feeding straight red cap milk and am very pleased with the results only on day 8 but fawns seem to love it. A little concerned I may be over feeding I had read when feeding straight red cap give them all they want and the two 8 day old fawns are eating around 40oz each per day. Seem to feel great full of energy and alert at this rate I am thinking about buying a milk cow. Trying to imagine someone bottle feeding twenty fawns a couple month old red cap milk and the looks they would get in the check out line at market basket.

Yep Wayne !! Same here, but I was at SAMs club with 20 gal. Of red cap in my cart and had a elderly lady come up to me and said, You must have some hungry mouths at home? I said with a smile, yes 15 of them!! She shook her head and said... God Bless you and walked away!!!!! Still makes me smile!! Charlie!!

Four seasons whitetails only red cap milk. keeping them on ground in 10' x 10' dog kennel all day and inside a hot house at night seem to eat more dirt than I remember last year. Last year they where in same kennel on concrete slab with six fawns fought the s#:tts whole time thinking it was a little unsanitary at times causing the problems this year I plan on moving fawns to empty pen at 3 weeks to help with sanitation issues

Any one using evaporated goat milk added to red cap?

We did the same in the past but found they did better by cuttin back on the amount of milk and gettin them on solids. Harder pellets in alot less time.

Seems when they are happy to eat dirt they also will pick at some Calf Mana and dry alfalfa!

We do the same thing. In a week or two just watch bloating. We put one drop of gas drops in every bottle and you won't have any problems.

Scott,

We use the Meyenberg evaporated goat's milk. We add it to Red Cap Milk. We have had good success with it.
