The pork industry can lose millions of hogs to a PARVO virus, close the borders and lock em down they Will spread it to the wild hogs. What's the difference???

This article is no worse than many others I have seen. It spews out garbage information because of two main issues. A bias against people farming animals considered to be wildlife and also a lack of knowledge to the facts. The sad part is the media as a whole reports more inaccurate and out rights lies than it does accurate and truthful information. Us deer people see this in "news stories" associated with deer. I see this in "news stories" about the trucking industry of which I used to be a part of. And I see it in "news stories" about aviation of which I have been a part of for well over two decades. I am sure all of you see this in "news stories" associated with your field of expertise as well. The media in general is a very poor way of learning anything.

boy did you read some of those idiotic comments on the bottom like we raise deer just for killing I swear people wake up it is no different than pigs cattle or sheep come on T&S

update on the final viral isolation of the Alabama facility

MCF spread by sheep that were housed at the facility

think it is more common in the south, anyone that has more info about that please share

Alabama Deer Die-Off Caused by Virus, Not CWD

Source: WAFF.com

MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) - State and federal agriculture officials said they have determined the cause of a die-off situation at a North Alabama deer breeding facility.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Reference Lab in Iowa confirmed that ovine herpesvirus-2, also known as Malignant Catarrhal Fever, caused a die-off that began in May.

Officials said the die-off was contained to the one breeding facility, and preventative measures have begun to protect the whitetail herd that remains.

Domesticated sheep who did not show symptoms, and that were housed in an adjacent pen to the deer, initially had the virus, which spread to the herd.

MCF causes no harm to humans, pets or other domesticated livestock. Affected deer will not transmit the virus to other deer or livestock.

"This isolated incident reminds producers how important it is to have strict bio-security measures in place," said State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Frazier. "Diseases like MCF, that are asymptomatic in domestic animals, can be devastating to native wild animals."

Thanks for the update Jerri Lee. I bet conservation officers walked all over these pens and left without sterilizing their boots or anything else. I have seen numerous photos of them depopulating game farms wearing the same shoes they will wear to the next farm or the wild. Are their behaviors not a bio-security risk???

I don't allow any gov official into my pens or even near my pens without them disinfecting their boots first. Always have done this. I explain it is due to my not wanting them to carry issues into my pens from outside the wire. They have all understood and complied.
