Hernias are relatively common. I have seen and observed deer grow over the years with hernias with no problems. A rule of thumb, if you think you can pass more than three fingers into the defect, you may have a problematic hernia. I have seen a buck for the past 4 yrs with an umbilical hernia the size of a base ball do fine... Seldom do they cause drastic enough problems. If it hangs well below the body wall, it could be a concern especially in a pregnant doe. Hernia repairs are routine and probably estimate around $300. If you have to sedate it for any reason, I would have a vet examine the hernia for possible repair while she's out. Can be passed to offspring. In small animals, but I have not seen it commonly passed in deer. Post a pic and we can give you a better idea as well. Good luck and God bless!!!
