I had 20 deer delivered one week ago. There are now 2 dead. One died about 1-2 days after delivery and now today I've found another one dead that probably died yesterday. I don't know what is wrong. I've got 2 feeders full of protein and all these deer are in a 6 acre soft release pen. It's full of thick brush, 2 protein feeders, and 2 water troughs.

The only thing I think might be stressing them out is a house we're building about 80 yards from one side of the pens. There is some noise from building but is that enough to kill them??

I've got to do something. I'm afraid if I open the gates of the soft release pen then they'll run themselves to death trying to find a protein feeder on the ranch (350 acres) and not go back to the pens to eat out of the feeders.

Can you move a feeder or two out into the 350 acre ranch? I would not think anything you did at the farm caused their deaths. I would think it was more of maybe a problem before you recieved them or it had to do with the stress. If they were high strung and a little on the crazy side..Who Knows! I believe i would let them in the bigger area if that is where they are going to end up anyways. More room to run might even calm them down a bit as they will seperate themselves and with the bigger area they are more likley to just walk around checking out their new area. Good Luck with them!!

G'day rockylakeranch

It sounds like post capture myopathy.

Were the deer "wobbly" when the came out of the transport?

As interest, is the feed avaliable the same as in their previous inclosure?Did you match it?

Are all the deer from the same source?

Were they prepared for transport by being kept in yards for several days,& then loaded out ,or darted?

Young or old animals?

What was the temp during transport?

Cheers Sharkey

It sure does sound like stress to me.......some deer just don't do well with change.......I hope you don't experience anymore losses!!
