typical vs non-typical

We had a lot of discussion in "what this industry needs" about raising typicals vs non-typicals. Bell and I were talking today about this subject.

I would like to ask people that raise 50% non-typicals a few questions.

I am not opposed to raising some but want to keep well balanced animals but want to become more educated by the people that do.  This is no way a knock on those who do.  I just want to decide if it is for me or not.

1. what size range to you raise?

2. how many(%) make it to hard horn without intervention?

how many do you have to cut/year with antler infections?

how many do you lose to antler infection each year?

how many do you have to strip the velvet off because they cannot rub it off?

3. what age are you selling at (example % at 1, 2, 3 etc)

4. what percentage of your herd is non-typical vs typical?

5  how many do you sell for velvet hunts vs how many in hard horn?

6  are you breeding mainly non-typical or more typical does to non-typical bucks or vice versa?

1. Our biggest buck we grew was 240" he was 80% typical. This year I believe were going to blow past that size.

2. A. No Intervention except for a buck that broke his antler and skull plate all together... We fixed him up and he is growing funky.

B. N/A

C. N/A

3. Not selling we have our own hunting preserve. We move to the preserve at the age of 2 in the fall.

4. 60% Typical 40% Non typical genetics

5. Brand new hunting preserve our first hunt are going on this fall.

6. We are breeding for both but our goal for Non typical is they have to be wide... Like X-factor he is non typical with a wide open frame so it does not look bad...

1.150-300 inches

2. Had 1 nice Typ buck get kicked by a doe fawn and broke a point. Darted and fixed..No Loss

3.All Three. Depends on the buyer.

4.50-50 I believe most people do not know what true Typical is. 90% of our captive deer fall in the Non-Typical catagory

5.N/A

6.50-50

If you look at our breeding program we pick our 2 year olds and 3 year olds that were big at 2. When harvesting deer, we can no longer afford to wait until they get 3, 4 or 5 so I never even consider what they did at that age when selecting breeders. I may use or purchase an older buck, but it will be based on what they were like at age 2. They have to score well (250 to 450 at 2) and have that look that gets hunters excited when they walk out.  They also have to be balanced so they can carry their antlers well. I never really breed for one single trait, but always have admired the people who do. Some deer I just like and can't really tell you why...And some deer I don't. And of course there are exceptions to all of this...lol

We like to use very high energy does and breed those back to high scoring, wide, and framey bucks.

We have only had to cut Timberjack, RolexBy10 and Doublejack.  My goal is not really to grow deer like these, but I feel like these deer will produce the most amount of antler in their offspring. These foundation breeders will produce a little of everything. Everything with lots of antler and very few duds. I like that.

Every deer we bred with this year kept their antlers this year and easily cleaned them off. We haven't had to cut a deer in velvet for 3 years.

We live bred to:

PayDay (360 at 2, 260 typical...420 at 3, 35 inside, 259 typical) Huge wide frame, my favorite 2 yr old ever!

Cadillac Kid (202 at 1, 274 at 2, 27 inside) Pretty frame

Whoop D Do (374 at 2, 37 inside) Huge frame with extras

Timberrock (246 at 1, 441 at 2) - You could shoot these genetics at age 1. And every hunter would love him!

MI - Beauty (200 at 2, 250 at 3) - This was our lowest scoring breeder deer so we bred him to super energy does - but what a look!

Waylons Impact (270 at 2, 27 inside) - Great look

Armed and Dangerous (225 at 2, 369 at 3, 28 inside) - Huge Fame

We also used a couple yearlings that were around 200 with a typical framey look. We don't like to but wanted to make the jump because we are guessing they will be great at 2!

We shoot all types and sizes of deer. The only deer that is difficult to get rid of is a lopsided deer. But then again a bow hunter may love him....lol

I love a pen full of 2 year old bucks that are all big and all different.

Good luck to everyone in 2014. The hunting demand for bucks is there for all sizes and shapes!

2. how many(%) make it to hard horn without intervention? (100%)

how many do you have to cut/year with antler infections? (0%)

how many do you lose to antler infection each year? (0%)

4. what percentage of your herd is non-typical vs typical? (OUR DEER ARE TYPICAL BUT SOME WILL HAVE A STICKER OR KICKER)

5  how many do you sell for velvet hunts vs how many in hard horn? (0%)

6  are you breeding mainly non-typical or more typical does to non-typical bucks or vice versa? (TYPICAL BUT I CANNOT SAY WE DON'T HAVE SOME NON TYPICAL DOES OUT THERE)

i HAVE PLACED MY ANSWERS NEXT TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION.

We would have to agree with Sam. We do let our bucks get to three though usually before we shoot them. But he is right, a lopsided deer is the hardest to sell, not a nontypical one!

"Balanced" and "Lopsided".....................a "Term" used for Not buying your shooter......................BUT.................Not when selling you semen or offspring ???LMAO

Just thought that was funny ?

And why due we breed for a BIG Score ?....................When in the fall.........................Preserves can't find close to enough to satisfy the demand for 140"-180" ?

Just wondering.........................Not intended to cause anyone's panties ta wad up...............Just asking? It's always got me in trouble? LOL ;)

Is that why every year i have a group of bucks from 150 to 250 and most only want the 150 to maybe 200 inches?

haha Wayne your funny. :p

thanks everyone for your answers

would still like to hear from more people especially those raising those with higher scores

looks to me like the market has shifted to 200-300.  Nobody raising 300+++????? maybe wild rivers and sam, nobody else???

maybe raising for world record maximum inches is over, what do  you think?

I dont believe anyone really bred for the world record and the ones that tried to breed 500 plus inches together did not get what they thought they would. Look at the breeding of say Ballistic or Big Rig, If i remember without looking i believe there were some fairly clean deer in those pedigrees. Sometimes things are out of our control i believe and other powers take over. I have to admit that i'm not a big fan of some of the higher scoring bucks out there but still have to be amazed at an animal that has the power to do what they do sometimes.

I think Big Rig and Free Agent blood was mixed a couple times and i have never seen a "Freak Nasty" out of that breeding! Sometimes it just dont work and other times..BOOM!!!
