Urgent help needed with sick doe

I have a doe that had its fawns a couple of weeks ago and just started acting really weird. She cannot stop shaking and is walking as if she were dizzy, and she cannot seem to control her head as it moves one side and the other.

Any thoughts of what this may be?

The fawns are two weeks old and I think I will have a hard time putting them on the bottle but I can surely try.

Any advice on what to do will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EG

It could be ehd. Any foam or drool coming out of mouth or nose? Either way you need to get meds in her as soon as possible

Dogs get a form of calcium deficiency and act the same way. I wonder if deer get this. EHD is another choice.

I'm sure the fawns will take milk if you are forced to try that. It will just take some time and a tight place so the fawns will not race around when you try to get them to accept you for their new mother if things go wrong. Good luck on the doe.

It could be a number of things......i would get a good dose of antibiotics in her ASAP!!! She could have an internal infection from having the fawns as well........

Edgar/Jose - I would suspect that she has a toxic infection from fawning, maybe all of her placenta did not pass and is now trapped inside her cervix and infected. The symptom you are seeing is probably because the infection has become systemic, in her blood stream, and has penetrated the brain barrier. Oxytocin will open her cervix and help her flush the tissue. Gentamycin or Amakacin given in the muscle and in fluids as a ******l flush, along with banamine are what I would recommend.

Good luck -

What's the latest Novillo? How is she doing? Robbie I need you on standby on my farm --girl!! Where did you learn so much about health issues on deer?

I had a doe act this way from what I thought might be a lack of Selenium. I gave her a shot of Bose and a shot of vitamin B complex just to be safe . Don't know witch worked but she was better in a few days.

Thanks for all your advice. The doe is atleast calm now and we have her on antibiotics. It looks like it is an infection she got while giving birth. We took the fawns and are struggling to get them on the bottle but I think it will not be such a big thing.

Thanks again

They may be old enough to see if they will drink the milk right out of a bowl.....might want to give that a try if your having trouble with the bottle........Good Luck!!

BJ,

I had a doe once that apparently had a meningial worm. She walked around like Stevie Wonder one day, seeming drunk and swaying her head. I gave her a good dose of ivermec and that evening she was better. Within 24 hours she was 100%. My vet said it was symptoms of meningial worm. That's all I know.
