I have a 2.5 month old buck fawn. We have had him since a week after birth when the mother was killed.

We started him on milk replacement powder formula. We gradually incorporated dirt, fruits and veggies. His main diet now is milk replacement, grapes, apples, bananas and sometimes he gets into the cat food.

I went out of town this last week and left my other half to care for the animals. The fawn got into a bag of cat food and ate way too much. He was laying down. Didn't want to get up looked as though he was dying. I told them to walk him constantly and not let him lay down incase he was foundered. I returned home from my trip lastnight. I gave him his bottle in which he only ate 2.5 ounces out of 8. I cut him up some apple pieces mixed with Banana pieces. I also took some karo syrup and rubbed on his gums. He drank some water as well.

This morning he wouldn't take his bottle, but did eat some fruit. He is still very lethargic. He walks as though he is drunk and weak. He scratched his head and knocked the fur off, but it seems his face has a purple coloring almost bruise like. He got into some seed ticks they were all over his ears. I got them off and put some apple cider vinegar on them. His ears seem dry and kind of scaley. I gave him a bath and he seemed to perk up. He bedded down after that and tonight ate 4oz bottle with apples and drank some bounce back. I had an injection of penicillin to give him, but decided to wait till morning. My question is what do you think is going on with him? Our vets in the area are not as familiar with treating wildlife animals. If you could direct me to what maybe going on with him and treatment options that would be greatly appreciated.

sounds to me like ph balance is off in rumen, making fawn thiamine deficient. I would give 3CC vitamin b complex, and 2 cc penicillin for 5 days.
