URGENT please- Doe with yellowish/green discharge

6-year old doe on farm (where my Rosa now is) has a yellowish/green discharge coming out of her **** parts, and she is straining to get it out.

She appears to be in pain. She has NEVER been pregnant with fawns, nor has she been bred.

PLEASE HOW CAN WE HELP HER? WE ARE DEER REHABBERS, NOT HIGHLY EXPERIENCED FARMERS.

I have read this from Dr. Jay on these boards: Yes it is alright to give the antibiotics if she is nursing. If she is tame enough you may want to infuse her uterus with 20cc of oxytetracycline. She may have had a retained placenta or just a metritis (uterine infection) from fawning. Good luck

Q: DOES THIS SEEM LIKE THE RIGHT TREATMENT?

I have advised the Rehab guys to inject her immediately with Draxxin, but they are having a tough time doing this. Should they inject IM or SQ?

Q: IS THERE ANOTHER MORE EFFECTIVE ANTIBIOTIC TO USE TOPICALLY?

Thank you for your help.

How can she have an RP if she is not nor has ever been pregnant? Am I missing something? A discharge that color sounds like an infection, but the circumstances seem odd given the information you listed.

What's an RP?

Female dogs can get infected uteruses even if they've never had puppies. It's called pyometra. I don't know if this is Pyometra, but I need to get some meds inside of her and am wondering which would be the best to give, please?

Our Vet is not a deer doctor- she is a large animal doctor and hopefully she will be able to get some good info. once I get some good info.

Thanks for your question, but I need some answers please.

RP=Retained placenta, which was mentioned in your original post. I don't see how it would be likely for a deer to have a retained placenta if they have never developed a placenta. She could absolutely have a uterine infection. When in doubt, we give a healthy dose of draxxin. In cattle the standard is to do a uterine flush with oxytetracycline (is this done in deer?)

No, no RP, you are correct. No chance of that happenin' to "Girlie".

They gave her a shot of the ever-present Draxxin, and Dr. Shipley advised them on how to treat further.

In the meantime I have read up on this a lot, and have found a lot of information, and even possible causes of this Metritis which, quite frankly, scares the daylights outta me. I am now trying to figure out "cause"... Yes, you are right about the LA200 lavage... thx friend

The Draxxin seems to have helped. They've given her only one shot, although I did encourage them to give her a shot of Dex or Banamine as well.

The puss (discharge) stopped but they did not flush her out with the Oxytetracycline... I am hoping that her cervix or uterus has not closed up, and now the infection is just remaining inside. This worries me...
