I thought it would be interesting to hear what some of you are experiencing/ seeing in and out of your pens with rut approaching us. Feel free to share what behavior oddities you have seen.

November 1st 1:00am I noticed my breeder buck who is only a yearling pacing a side of the pen facing a direction that had no doe action. He started scraping fence side like he was wanting out. Moments later I saw him trying to overturn the nearby water trough! This is my first go around with an antlered breeder so I found it interesting. Upsetting but still interesting. What other stuff might I possibly witness fellas? And what is your strangest encounter?

Sit back Rusty and enjoy the sights !! Your bucks will do the same as the wild ones, the only difference is yours is confined and they will run that fence for the next month and half !!! It always seems the best is on the outside for the boys !!! LOL

Rusty, you are going to see and hear things for the next 6 weeks that you won't believe. In one of our breeder pens, we have to go out and look for the water tank every morning. I actually started putting in an old metal water bucket for him to push around so he will leave his water alone. Sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't. He loves the noise it makes when he wails on it. We had one of our breeder bucks in the front yard last night (we are completly double fenced) while we move deer and he started rubbing his antler nubs on the brick on our house! What a racket that was. They are total idiots this time of year and so much fun to watch. Enjoy!

Steve that buck was marking his territory.... a real man wouldn't take that....I suggest you go out and challenge him. It's a good thing that men don't become idiots because of the opposite ***.

My sympathies to you future widow

Just think how much built up frustraition you would have if you were only able to breed for a short time each year.

Went out to feed tonight and the breeder buck was chasing a doe the 2 year olds were all running the fence snort weezing and grunting and rubbing anything they could and the yearlings were all pushing and shoving to see who is the biggest and baddest. I have to agree that it is great fun watching them being total idiots.

Rubbing the bricks!?!:p That's funny stuff. I would be afraid buck sees competition in sliding glass door and crash:eek: in comes bloody interior redecorator!:(

I was in the stand this morning about 30 yards from my buck pen. I heard antlers crashing and I only have one antlered buck in that pen. Upon closer observation I discovered my buck locked with another wild buck. Go figure! Looks like it is time to move the stand. ;)

I had a buck two days ago that I needed to score to negotiate shooter prices...I knew this buck was a little on the "fence-banger" side, so I crept up on him with the tractor-most of my deer pay little or no attention to it, got a good shot, got him scored. While I was waiting for him to reverse, I noticed there were some scratches on the hood of the tractor, and you guessed it! Red paint on the deer's main beams. Turds are rubbing on the tractor. Had to take it out of the pen. Also bucks are scent checking the buck fawns on the other side of the fence. What gives? Horny, horny, horny.

We had those problems long before velvet came off.

Rusty 30 yards from pen, What would B&C think about that.:D:D

I have a stand close to a breading pen and sat in it for the first time Sunday night. My buck was keeping one of the does seperated from the rest and she wasn't liking it. This is my first breading season and I couldn't believe the amount of tending grunts and sort wheazes I heard. I have hunted hard for 30 years and never seen a show like this. If a wild buck would have come in, to get my attention it would have to done like my wife does and stand between me and the show.

Last night he had a second doe pinned down.

My breeder is fighting through the fence with my yearling bucks on the other side, they have one tear in the heavy cloth that they fight through. I am going to have to put some plywood up to stop it, it is cool to watch them fight though, they snort weeze and grunt at each other then try and bash antlers trough the wire, the yearlings are just a little to afraid to get into a serious fight though, they usually run off as soon as he lowers his head

On Sunday we had a yearling that kept riding the two year olds, I tried to tell him it was a bad idea......monday morning.....too many holes to count .... 20+
