What to look for in milk replacers?

Yet another question! As fawn season is approaching (no fawns just yet though) we decided to switch from using whole milk, like we did last year, to using milk replacer as it was cheaper, Save-A-Caf Ultra 24 multi-species milk replacer is what we purchased. I know, I know, cheaper is not always better but the budget is pretty tight right now!

Which brings me to the question, what do you look for in a milk replacer? I know that a doe's milk is very high in protein but other than that I'm clueless!

Hey Autumn, I am not sure what exactly to look for, but I have used Ultra24 before and the fawns done fine.

Thanks for the reassurance! I get too worried that we're doing the wrong thing!

Ultra 24 is all we have ever used with no problems but we also mix ours with the red cap milk.

Autumn......try to enjoy the experience.....I stressed myself out when I bottle fed fawns to the point it was no longer worth it form me to do...I now pay someone to do my bottle feeding........and I finish them off in August so they get used to me......one of the big things is to keep everything clean...clean...clean......and watch the little guys closely.......if they get a little loose don't panic ....it happens....know that these forums are the best tool you have......you will have all the answers and help you need at the end of your finger tips!

if your trying to save money ultra 24 wouldn't be my choice I've checked every formula that I can find for price ,fat content, protein, ext... and for the money river city formula is the best and len has it at a good price

I have never used river city, that may a good one to look into. I have used Ultra 24, mixed just as the bag says, and I had great results from birth til weaning, no major problems and the fawns were as big at weaning as the ones on the mother, so don't worry about using it.

I'm a cheap old guy and had nothing else handy so I used my River City milk on my bighorn sheep crosses that I had to place on the bottle last year and this year. A good fat content has proven to be what our deer need in the milk. That milk replacer will work on lambs also and did as well producing good body size and dropping as it did on the whitetail and mule deer fawn I've raised.FYI
