Whats a fair price?

I am thinking about the sale that just went on thursday!  They sold groups of 4 to 5 button bucks from both AI ed and live bred programs!

They deer sold for 1100 to 1300 each.  I am wondering what other people think about the price!  Was it too high, too low or about right?

Another question:  What do you think a reasonable price would be for a big group of bucks.  I have 50 button bucks, 25 coming 2yr olds and 25 coming threes.  What is your thoughts on a group price?  Most of my deer are A TEAM GENETICS!  They are tb accredited and burr certified!  Thanks in advance , JIM S

Tough question.. Bloodlines mean a ton but these guys buying buttons for 1300 that may not bring them much more that that at 3 are taking a huge chance. Again if these were all 200 at 2 kinda buttons then yes but not sure that was the case.

Your bucks would depend a pile on how bad you wanted to sell.  if you could average 4 grand at 3..2500 at 2 and 1000 each for buttons it may be close  Thats a great payday for any kind of livestock raising but again..Just a guess on my part.

A lot of those bucks were purchased for genetic lines. Its a tough call and a gamble. If you stick 1500$ into them for feed to get them to three, your at 2500$. That is not including feed, breeding, or any losses which we all know are going to happen. Some hunting ranches will buy bulk quantities of bucks, and then the gamble is on them.

Seems the recent rule in larger herds of stocker genetics is $500 for buttons , $1000 for yearlings and $1500 for 2y olds and up from there if the 2yr olds are approaching or over 200 inch. If the antlers are narrow or not big framed forget it. We can't give you anything for them cause we can't get our hunters to shoot them. These are prices we pay as that's the price the sellers are bringing to us.

I thought the buck fawns brought pretty darn good prices, not outrageous but good.  I saw Dave Renicks herd this past fall, he had some really nice typical yearlings and I think his sold for $1100 each, a group of 4.

It is easy to forget a buck fawn's mothers upkeep when figuring up cost. Not a concern when buying buttons.

$500 for a weaned buck fawn seems very low for me!  Even A $1000 for a yearling and $1500 for a 2 yr old!  I had 20 three yr olds this year  Smallest was 202 and the biggest was 380   There is no way I'd sell that low!  It hardly covers the feed and the doe expense!  Just saying

Simonson , your herd is obviously superior to the deer we are talking about here being 202 -380. Typically the 10 or 12 herds we bought in the last couple years would have trouble producing a 200" buck. You are exactly right in that you can't break even on the doe and the feed on most of these deals . The other option if your the grower is keep feeding them or put me in the freezer.

Most often the sellers have already had 2 or 3 deals fall through and they are happy to find that there is a willing buyer. We can't buy them all but we buy what makes sense for us . I think we are talking stocker hunt preserve deer and you are talking show deer and breeders.

Thanks for the description of Superior, Show deer and breeders BUT in the long run we are all just producing shooters/stockers deer!  They are really only worth what someone will pay to shoot them!  The breeder market was way out of bounds in years past and they are coming down in price because they were all over inflated!  I feel so sorry for the people who pissed their money away that got caught up in the whole BREEDER MARKET scam!  They paid 10 times what they should have and sometimes ended up with CRAP!  Not looking for a fight just stating what I have witnessed and Im so happy I didnt fall for that!  I was close and then A TEAM GENETICS really put the whole thing in perspective    Thanks CHAD and FRED You guys are true friends,   JIM S

If you didn't want a response to your original question , don't ask the question. Didn't mean to offend anyone. Just reporting fact from our recent experiences in purchasing shooter and grower bucks.

Wow where did that come from????

I'm done asking questions on here!  For the record I wasn't replying to your comments I was referring to what a deer ( Shooter Buck) is worth in my opinion!

No wonder why people don't comment on this forum     Have a great day and it seems that some of us need a NAP or a bottle of milk?

Also from the SEVERAL likes I got on this topic lots of people liked what I wrote.

Take a hard look at your last 2 posts on this subject and you will see why people refrain from posting on here. It wasn't my intent to teach you the difference between superior deer , breeders ,,,stockers or anything of that sort. Needs a nap or a bottle of milk?

Never been responded to on any forum like that . No big deal I guess.

The real subject here was buck prices. Only been doing this since 1979 . Thought I might offer some input. Appears that got interpreted as an insult.

Buck prices are low by any standard. Not a secret. The $1000-1200 button buck of the subject here are probably fair prices for the quality they are. If they were button bucks that are destined to achieve 160 " at 3 then they should have sold for $500 or less. Same statement different sentence structure.

I am going to grab a glass of milk and go take a nap now! WTF

I would hope by now that there are not many 160 at 3 button buck kinda bloodlines left out there. Whomever has those should be close to bankrupt or are working a full time job just to own deer. I myself would have to have a pile of buttons or need the cash REAL bad to give them away for that.

As we can read..Different strokes for different folks.

ARROWED Tell me what is so wrong with what i posted that you think is so bad?  AND WTF ???? REALLY!!

What you have posted is just fine. we are all hoping that this industry turns around. Those that are raising deer on the top and on the bottom are needing better prices. I will keep buying the deer that I need to supplement what we raise for our hunt preserve. When a seller wants to sell me 14 button bucks for $7500 I am usually buying. Turned one away last month that has 7 yearlings and 10 buttons and wanted $8000. I bought from him before and you can't get a 140 out of his 3 year olds. That's a tough buck to sell and make money on a hunt preserve.

Four Seasons , we still have a lot of growers up here in MN that haven't produced a 170, I know that that is unlike most on this forum but they still love raising deer . I buy a lot of their deer every year. They are not making money raising deer but they aren't getting out anytime soon. I bring them a doe fawn or two every time I haul a load . It is fun to see the start of change in the young deer on those farms..

Arrowed I never meant anything bad by my posts.  I see you are from MN and maybe I will meet you someday, do you attend the banquet in Alexandria?  THese people that cant produce at least a 170 three yr old, do they know that if they wanted to they could buy some really great producing does or doe fawns very reasonable?  Id love to work with them if they wanted to do that!  Take care, JIM

Jim

Won't be going to Alexandria. Not much for organizations. It seems the people that are raising the lower end deer have been raising deer a long time. Most of them don't care to change. I don't understand it either. Reminds me of my dad. A part of his everyday routine was to chase cows back into the pasture almost every evening before milking. This went on for years. It took 15-30 minutes almost every night. It only took 3 hours to fix the fence after he died.

Where you located Jim? I am looking for bred does from time to time.

Thanks Memory Lane, Arrowed1 what is hard for me to understand is Why deer farmers dont upgrade their genetics when they can do is very reasonable   I put an ad on the MN deer farmers website for this years doe fawns    I included as straw of Simply Amazing, Ammuntion or Little Lakota   They fawns were priced very low and I never got one call yet!  Those farmers could be raising bigger deer in 2 or 3 yrs, getting more money and they would rather keep raising what they have????  How can they keep afloat?  I'm just wondering I guess!  Thanks again Memory Lane,  JIM S
