I have a doe in with my "Alpha" buck and a yearling buck, other does too. The doe had twin bucks in May and they have totally different coloring, size, temperment etc. Short of DNAing them what is the possibility they have different Sires? I know that happens often with dogs and cats but what about deer? Has anyone seen this on their farm and did you confirm it with DNA testing? Thanks, Tom

I have heard of farms using 2 different straws in AI, but that is a little different. You can confirm it with DNA testing. Keep us posted if you DNA them. I am curious myself.

It is very possible, I have seen first hand an older mature buck breed a doe in standing heat. A minute or two after the mature buck jumped the doe a yearling buck ran up and bred the doe. If you are looking to DNA your animals down the road I would suggest only having one buck in your pens with your does. It will make life a lot easier on your end!

several years ago ,we ai'd our does early am. after we finished i went down the alley to shut gates, and discovered 2 of my does had got in with a single 2 y.o. buck(a gate was not latched)I went straight to the house grabbed my dart gun. Knocked the buck down and put the does in their pen.A year or so later we DNA'd the fawns, 1 set of triplets and 1 single fawn.2 of the triplets were from the 2 y.o. buck 1 from the AI.the single fawn from the 2 yo.they can have fawns from different sires. brian

This brings up a interesting theory. Why should we not put our does in with a buck right after we AI? If the AI is stuck, is it stuck within a few minutes? If it stuck to one side, why not let a buck take care of the other? We usually wait 3weeks to move a backup buck in, but why?

Well, ask yourself this question. Are the bucks that you AI to better than or different than the ones your just AI'd the doe to? Also, there should be enough semen in the doe to breed both eggs. Maybe one is an hour behind the other. I don't see any reason to put a buck in with a doe right after AI. You could have it go completely against your plan also. The buck could chase the doe around getting her worked up and have her body temp get up too high and kill off the semen that was just placed inside her by your AI tech. That would completely defeat the purpose of doing AI in the first place. This of course is just my opinion.

Sincerely,

Johnny B

I wonder how long the semen is alive after it is in the doe. Minutes, hours? I just do not know. Could the doe be placed with a buck 2hours later? Then if one egg does not get fertilized, the back up could? Not looking at doing this, we LapAI, but just curious. It might be a way to help someone get more multiples. Of course the health of the doe is top priority. Thanks for input Johnny.
