Immobile Fawn

I never thought this would work, but we had a fawn run into the fence and a friend, who is a chiropractor, came to visit. He took one look at the fawn and asked if he could "adjust" her. Within an hour she was standing up and her neck was back to normal. I was amazed! So maybe you could try a chiropractor.

Thunder, I would have never thought of a chiropractor but if it worked for your fawn maybe it would work for tontee. Great advice.

That is great news Barry, great news.

Honestly, the chiropractor might do the trick. Like mentioned earlier, I seriously wouldn't doubt it if one or two of her vertebrae are luxated (or shifted out of position) putting pressure on her spinal chord. Once shifted back into position (which can be tricky without surgery) and time to allow the swelling to go down, I bet she'll be off to the races.

Thanks for the updates and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you and Tontee!

PS- I'd try just a tiny bit of Dex, but NOT if you have used Banamine in the past day or so.

Oh you guys, I've been thinking of a chiropractor, but just picture me walking in to the office with a 50# fawn in my arms. I just might make the call tomorrow and see if he wouldn't make a farm visit, who knows it would be a story I'm sure he could use for awhile. My wife's family has season tickets with him anyway so he might come on out, we'll see what tomorrow brings. Check out the new photos. We seem to be making some head way. I couldn't have asked for a better patient, she is an absolute AWESOME fawn to work with.

Thanks again everyone for your thoughts and ideas. My2girls, by the looks of your picture I wish you were in my neighborhood to care for this girl.

Oh Holly, she has been given Dex twice when the vet was out and I did give her

Banamine this am. Please fill me in on the Dex vs Banamine in close proximity.

Hey Barry- One of the surgeons at OSU suggested to never give the two in conjunction with one another as they could react adversely on the liver and kidneys, especially in fawns.

She looks SO good. At this point, I might waive the visit to the chiropractor and chalk it up to a spinal swelling somewhere that has started to subside (although I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see you taking her in :). She is bearing weight.... and on her own. That is excellent!!!! Geez, these little fawns we raise just never cease to amaze me. They are so resiliant. Great work Barry. All that little girl needed was you to not give up on her.

Goodness; at this rate, you'll be posting video of her running around in the pen tomorrow :)

Holly ~ thanks for the info on the two drugs, I'll put that in the info bank for future reference...

Tontee is just one of those deer that has the will to survive. If she had been a mother raised fawn there would have been no chance to save her. We are not out of the woods yet but things are sure looking better then they did 24 hours ago.

I do however look forward to posting that video for you tomorrow :)...

I had one Barry that we found lying on the ground with the head back like you are saying. It also had a mark on the face giving me the idea it had hit the fence or gate where we found it. It acted the same as yours with head turned back but in the end it didn't make it . It couldn't get its neck straightened out at all and showed a kink in it when it did try to look ahead. I guessed it to be a spinal damage from some impact. It lived a couple of weeks .Not much help but some ideas. Jim

Good to hear Barry !!! Now I see her, I think the Listeria thought is out!!!! I was going to tell ya about the Dex and Banamine combo but I was beat to the punch. Learned that at a NADEFA conference seminar. I didn`t know that before either. Good info to keep in the back of your mind. Good luck, she`s looking better.

Awesome Antlers - I would so snatch her up :) I am so in-love with my 2 deer it's not even funny :) All I can say is SPOILED - but they love it and so do I! I do want to thank you for all the hard work, love, patience, and compassion you are showing in caring for precious Tontee. You seem like a wonderful person - there needs to be more people like you :) It would make for a lot more happier deer :)

Holly - I love reading your posts - I can tell that you care about deer a great deal - I love it!! :)

Holly ~ I didn't know how to post a video but I would have liked to for you. Tontee is up and getting around pretty darn good today. I had been leaving her out in my back yard but had to move her back into a pen today (that's a good thing). She actually didn't even want me messing with her today (except when I had a bottle). Believe it or not she is even running around a little. How about that!!

Thanks again to everyone who offered the kind words and good advice...

My2girls- I can see you love your deer as well!!! Thank you.

Barry- I am so very happy for you. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the pics. I have to admit, I thought it might be another few days before she started cruising around that well. GREAT NEWS INDEED!!!!

PS- Now all you have to do is cross your fingers that she doesn't get along so good that she works up enough speed to do what she did the first time :)

Take care buddy!

Mitch, one of the tell-tale symptoms of listeria is rapid eye movement. It is the distinguishing symptom that "goat" polio does not have.
