I got a 1 week old fawn that has a cloudy looking eye ? what would cause this , and what should i give her ? Thanks Jamie
Does this fawn seem to have normal vision? Years ago we had a buck fawn that was born with cataracts in both eyes. It was obvious that he could not see very well. We gave him to someone with very small pens that had no trees or obstructions in them and he did fine, living for several years there and even breeding does. He did get picked on by the ther bucks when he was in with them.
Vit A D and penicillen is how we have treated this problem. I have been told it is a vitamin deficiency and/or infection from the navel. Either way this treatment has cleared up many cloudy eyes for us. I usually give two treatments of Vit AD about 2-3 days apart and penG twice daily for about a week.
If the cornea is cloudy it most likely is a corneal ulcer and an opthalmic ointment without steroids can be applied twice daily for one week. That should heal. If the pupil (inside the eye) is cloudy than it could be a juvenile cataract or a persistant vessel to the lens. Surgery is only option for this and very costly. Make sure your ointment does not contain steriods or the ulcer will not heal.
I'd also give Vit A D. I have always used penG on cloudy eyes and it has cleared them up. I have not tried Baytril for cloudy eyes but have had great success with it on fawns for other issues.
Do both eyes look this way or just the right eye?? Pretty aggravated eye. Flours ein staining of the eye and examining with a black light would helP to know what degree of ulcer you may have especially if only one eye affcected. No steroids on the eye but you can give dex I'm to help cOmbat inflammatory response. Antibiotics systemically(injections) helP too. Silvidine topically works great especially w fungal infections. Chloramphenicol ointment will

Cloudy Eye
I just read through the responses about treatment for cloudy eyes in fawns. I have two fawns with this. One fawn has both eyes and another just one but the one with only one eye cloudy is also demonstrating middle ear issues. Droopy ear and had wobble all to the same side with the cloudy eye. Both fawns are being treated with Primor and Thiamine. Fawn with wobbly head is also getting Meclizine. Any suggestions and how long before I should notice improvement?
