Bottle Feeding Question

Question on bottle feeding fawns. Have talked to different farmers about what they feed, it varies from place to place. I would like to hear the opinions from everyone on the amount of milk you are feeding. How much do you increase , is it per day, etc? At what point do you stop, how many ounces, or do you continue to a certain point (8-10 weeks?) before you wean?

I have heard of some farms feeding as much as 25-30 ounces to a fawn per feeding in the end. Some feed until the fawn walks away full.

Would you cut the fawns off at a certain point on the bottle to steer them towards grain?

I feed Rick's plan for the most part with a few variations. Just interested in what everyone else tries. Thanks for the help.

Hey MarkR,

This intrigues me. I stop at 14 oz but not sure why. I guess I'm a little scared of loose stool and feel a fawn that isn't stuffed probably feels a little better. Is this wrong??

For the first 2 wks, we feed every 4-6 hrs. Now that she is over 2 wks old,

we are giving 8 oz every 8 hrs. And we are going to start giving solid food.

But we are only following directions on a bag of unimilk. We are following

directions for a goat on the package. According to their direction, you don't ever go over 8 oz. Because you start to give solid food along with the milk.

But, heh, this is our first time. So what do I know.

I feed red cap milk. All they want three times a day and have had no problems. My bottle feds are healthier and bigger than mother fed fawns on my farm.

I use the same chart as above or pretty close any way, I never go over 12-14oz red cap 3 times a day. When they get around 8-9 week's cut back to 2 times, ween at 12 week's. I feel the more milk I give them as they get older the less feed that they will eat so I keep the milk cut back when they are eating solid food well. Just depends on the fawn.

That is rick brownings feeding program!!Seems alot of farms has taken it over and mabey made a change or two. Thanks again rick from many of us that you have helped stay on the right track and grow healthy fawns!!!

Thanks for the input from everyone.

Four Seasons,

I believe you're right , many follow Rick's program.

Question for Rick, if reading this, do you stop at 14 ounces or does it depend on the fawn?

Any other input from farmers would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mark,

We are feeding red cap. Last year i went by Ricks program, this year i am feeding them until they start to slow down and seem not as interested. My fawns this year are twice the size as last years fawns around this time!
