I know bj was one of flees great sires but can anyone tell me what and how he produced and how his female offspring have reproduced?

You will find BJ in many of the great bucks and power does pedigree's. I believe there is more well known bucks from his does than you will find direct sons. We still have a straw of BJ. Here are a few bucks out of his does.

Sundowner, Lakota, Hardcore, Maximus CR, Maximus DT to name a few.

My buck Slingshot was BJs largest son @ 338" He's produced 175" yearlings and 300" 2yr from our does. His daughters are also producing very large framed sons.

People never really gave Slingshot his due, I guess because he is too "old school" for the current market, but facts are facts, he was a huge deer! He was over 400lbs, his last year he scored 247" @ 7 with just 19 points. His widest spread was 30" his longest beams were 31 5/8" & his heaviest mass was 66". He passed on all those traits with strong consistency. In my opinion one of the most underrated bucks on the market, surprising being a Flees buck! Hey I've still got a few straws if you guys are interested in a sure thing!

Dustin, makes a good point and it seems that many sires that never hit the “lime light” will never have the chances to become “proven” simply because of less does being bred to that particular buck. Sling Shot was a buck actually born on our farm when BJ was live breeding for us and was then purchased as a 2 year old by Harry Strawser. I’m not sure how much breeding he really did at Harry’s but I bet most of us would love to produce shooters that had the look of TM one of Sling Shoot’s sons. Just as a thought what if a buck like Sling Shot would have bred the quality and quantity of does such as sires like Maxbo, Bucky or High Roller??? I bet if this would have happened Sling Shot would be considered “The Real Deal” and put on the super sires list and prodigy from him would be worth big bucks… I would buy every shooter I could get my hands on that looked like TM!!!:)

Tell me about it Russ! If he was bred to even just 10% of the does those other bucks had been I'm willing to bet he would be recognized at their abilities. It's all in the breeding Slingshot has with that hybrid vigor. People may look dumb at me when I say it, but he's bred same as Rolex, Hardcore, Slick, Ranger, Texas Tea, Geronimax, Climax, Roosevelt etc and the list just keeps on going. We wonder why certain bucks have the tendencies to out perform others and think it's by chance, well science has proven this method effective a very long time ago. It's about time we learn how to breed our deer instead of playing genetics roulette. The smaller budget farms can really make out in this tough market as long as they do their homework. Remember the preserves don't ask you the pedigree of your bucks when you unload them... I'm working on some sharp lookin shooters for you guys next year, including a full brother to TM! I added a pic of TM, SS yearling, Lonewood/SS yearlings. The look the industry thrives on!

We will have BJ semen for sale in the 2012 Midwest Select. Anyone who would like some BJ semen can call me 660.342.5851. We have several straws for sale. I think BJ semen may be as hard to get as Poncho before long. If someone would like to buy all the BJ semen we have we would sell it all to one guy if he would like to tie it up. We have 27 straws. BJ is in a lot of the industry's biggest sire. Just look around.

must be your tamest deer.

Dearjohn,

Since you have always had very enlightening things to add to most discussions on here. I started researching, what all you have to say and I found this:

"Between the coyotes and the dnr giving block permits out to the fruit farmers and the local meat hunters. the deer around here are a rare thing to see".

Well Dearjohn, from the looks at what size deer you shot last November, they don't get very big either. Do they?

I think it's more unethical to shoot small bucks than it is to hunt over corn!

My opinion, just saying...........

Cool thread, it is fun to look back on a great buck with some retrospective. Up here in Michigan a lot of deerfarmers had great success with Outrageous offspring both male and female. Outrageous was a BJ grandson out of Pride. We always thought that reproductive power came through BJ ! ( along with W-24 of course we can't forget the dam :p)

I have only been in the deer bizz for a few year's and just been researching genetic's and picking semen to use for a couple year's. I dont yet have a full understanding of the best way to go about it all though I do think I have a good idea. Either way nothing beat's year's and year's of actual breeding experiance. I quess what I am getting at here is take a buck like BJ without a doubt a buck that has done a lot for many farm's. With price's like they are making it a must to raise big deer fast, would it best to use BJ him self or use one of his proven son's that is a bigger inch buck though BJ is the one that produced that bigger buck. That's where I hit a road block when looking at buck's I like. I like many of the older sire's but then I look at many of there son's and just dont know what choice is the right one to make there. A lot of time's for me it comes down to the cost of semen, good son for a fraction of the cost of semen from the original sire.

I think that is a great question RLA and it has been discussed on here before, only then breeding does were being focused on.

Question being - Right...on paper the son is better, or as in the case of the doe, being bred by something better than what is known to be in her background or just another generation of a great buck breeding her, will it make her daughters better, or...is it ''most of the time'' best to stick with the originals for their proven ''magic'' of reproductive success???

Like you said RLA - only years and years of breeding experience would be able to attain an accurate 'big picture' on the average answer.
