I am not advertising only looking for advice. I have my breeder Un-leashed his pedigree is pictured. My question is what doe pedigrees should I look for this season and in the open season that will go well with him to sell as bred doe next year as I may or may not draw from him again I am not advertising only getting advice. Thanks for your help as I am not the best at matching them up yet. I just want to pick some brains.

87 views and not one suggestion. I am looking to buy one soon please help

Travis i think you need to focus more on raising stocker bucks rather than thinking about selling bred does. In todays world of deer farming if you are not at the top you will find it hard to sell any females for any kind of profit. If you dont have a top pedigreed buck or a real good looking buck at best it will be tough. I and many others went the route you want to head and lost our butt. Then we focused more on stockers and the banker(Wife) started to smile again. Just a thought from a guy that was in your shoes 3 short years ago!!!

Travis, if I understand your question correctly you want to buy does to breed to your buck and then resell. And this is because you don't intend to collect semen from him to sell. So the bred does are the income option instead.

My advice is don't do it. Offer live breedings or offer some of your fawns you will have from your current doe herd, but don't buy does to resell. I don't see it as a profitable option. Plus you would need to find a buyer who likes and wants the very bloodlines your offering. That narrows your pool of potential buyers.

Just my honest opinion. I hate seeing people lose money.

Ok I understand where you guys are coming from. So let me be real with ya. I am trying to get advice on what in today's working man budgets can I look for that will go well with unleashed to make me some bucks that will be nice stockers. I dream big but at the end of the day in looking for one maybe two doe that I can improve my doe herd with and I want opinions on what will compliment him the best but I can still afford

Buddy that dont take much... Many like to line breed and do well with that but trust me..You can cross many of todays blood and make 240in plus bucks that sell like hotcakes. Been there,Done that.  You need to just give it time with your lines that you have now and see where you are in a year or two.  You bought that buck. He may not be what alot of people like to breed with themselves but i would bet that boy will make stockers just fine.  This game takes time. This is my 4th year and i did awesome in the sales dept and i sure dont have alot of high dollar stuff. If you can make stockers at 2yrs old that ranches like then move them out. Why wait till 3yrs if they are not top breedings that MAY have a chance to grow alot between 2 and 3. Sell 15-20 stockers a year and you wont be worried about to much!!

Travis, You bought Unleashed from Daniel over at Hollow Road Whitetails............? Just take a look at what he's been using and making crosses with and stay grounded in your purchases and see what your buck can do.

You are in the place ALOT of farms give no thought to.........................'I bought a breeder and I want to have folks want MY deer'.

When you A/I fails and you get back up fawns or you buy a breeder....................If its not what folks want..................Your a "Stocker Grower" Like it or not!

I found that out when I spent $50,000 on The "Hot Flavors " of the week and got 35 doe fawns & 6 bucks from my back up buck Maxin Eagle 335" at 3 18" 5/8" G2s...............His mother has NEVER had a 3 yr old son score less that 330" at 3 and 240" at 2.........................But They weren't what folks wanted!

So I sold what I could to folks like your self that wanted to upgrade and moved on!

Then for the first time saw where Myself and the VAST MAJORITY...........................Like it or NOT are AT!!!

We are growing what this Industry is REALLY driven by and.....................Well it's NOT the Breeder market!

I bought Rawhide..................Because I could not keep throwing money at an ENDLESS fire and had researched what his pedigree is built on and what Levi Weaver had grown with his blood line mix and it did't take long to see what Rawhide could do on his first group of sons from VERY limited breeding and NOT Top 30 type deer he had 230" - 300"+......2 Yr Old  sons 24" - 30" wide.

Grow what YOU like because at the end of the day...........................That's what your gonna have and if you believe in Unleashed and his pedigree stick to your guns and with time and production. You will have you and your farm in a position to make money from selling BIG unleashed sons that will make you money!

Stay TRUE to what YOU want to do and it will all work out!

Good Luck

Travis, to give my opinion to that question I would say this. Your breeder is made up of the Patrick line, the Sundance line, PA Geronimo line and the Flees line with BJ. I would have a diverse selection of does covering each of those lines and let him breed to see where you get your best results. Be very discerning in your assessment of the offspring and then decide which of those bloodlines to focus on more to continue breeding him to.

Hope that helps

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do with your doe fawns?  If you are producing good shooters, you are making the vast majority of your income from them, however the doe fawns wouldn't be as valuable unless they are from the few "hot" bucks of the year.  Still having good genetics, you wouldn't want to give them away but at the same time the market isn't going to pay much for them.  At $500 a year to feed, it's not cost effective to keep them unless are going to use them as breeders.  Does this make sense?

This question is open to everyone.  I've given this a lot of thought and I would like to know what others do.

This is the 500 lb Elephant in the room that folks DON'T want to talk about!  You have 2 basic option and 1 is make a deal with a Hunting Preserve and the other is ???? We all know what the Dairy,Goat and Sheep industry has done with them for years.

Rodger thank you

Travis, Sorry you didn't like my assesment of the situation? LOL

Wayne not that I don't value your opinion you know a lot more than I and know your trying to help me. Trust me I know

Breed for the shooter market unless you have unlimited advertising money. The advice above is sound. Many people got caught trying to raise breeders only to find out they had to sale shooters at a loss. There is a lot of hype to the big name. Unleashed should raise nice shooters. As for the doe fawns, keep the ones that have nice brothers at 2 and get rid of the older does that do not produce. They make good barbecue!

You can make money on shooters!

How true. Many cant stand the thought of pulling the plug on a whitetail deer. Reguardless of their age.  Fact is they all have to go sometime. A farm is a farm no matter what you are raising. All are treated the same!

Travis:

You received a lot of great advice from experienced guys. I can tell you, what I do is keep it simple and work with what I have. In all the years I have been farming I have been a closed herd, which means I haven't had to add any deer to my herd. That's not to discourage buying great genetics, but financially that may be impractical. You would be amazed as to how many crosses you can get out of the deer you have. Careful line breeding takes time but is well worth the results. You really need to know what you have before you will know what to buy. This year is the first year I added anything to my herd and it was that doe I purchased at the pa sale. This doe had an outcross I am interested in. I am hoping for doe fawns to make a few additional outcrosses. I just wanted to share what worked for me. Remember, both Yellow 207 and Yellow 208 ( Unleashed) were wombmates and both were huge. Yellow 207 was supposed to be the future of my farm until he was taken by the mountain lion/bear. I don't know what does you have but I would be glad to look at them and give you my thoughts.

Shooters with symmetry, tine length, mass and average width will pay the bills all day long.  If you can raise 150-220 at 2 is where you need to be.

I am in deed aiming for the shooter market. I never really thought of the breeder market I don't have the money or the name that it takes to run with the big dogs and am very real about that. Daniel you can expect can email with my doe pedigrees I have seen your farm, I know what you have done and I will very much respect your answer. I am buying one doe per year bred it has what I have done the last three years and I sell one to two every year. I am asking if anyone knows of maybe a hidden name that is out there that I can look into that may go well with my breeder. By that I mean the small farm that has big deer that only sells "big" shooters I know I am selling shooters, but, but why not sell big shooters? In my eyes that means 200-240" 2 yr olds! Half my doe won't do that. They are pets to my wife son and family. I can not sell them more would I do that to my family. I have always heard it takes the same to feed good genetics as it does the bad ones. So why not get a good one? These 150" typicals are not paying the bills. That's why I bought a breeder. I do not ai. And really with unleashed and his sons why should I? That is an added expense. I got a couple nice calls from great people reffering me to some kind of hidden names that have big deer and I am looking into those leads

Travis:

Looking forward to your email, I will try and help anyway I can. Once you get a year under your belt with Yellow 208 you will have a a whole variety of genetic crosses to mix and match. As Roger suggested, focus on Yellow 208's pedigree. Those lines are proven over many generations and line breeding with those genetics to see which produces the results you are looking for and then focusing on that is one way to maximize your investment, and I believe the best course of action. Remember, nothing happens overnight, it will take you several years to create your foundation.

Your thinking is correct!
