lime?

I like to lime and frost seed my pens at the same time. I always have empty pens for rotation that were turned and planted in the fall. The pens that were not in the rotation last fall will be limed and frost seeded here in March to get through summer and then the deer will be put in the new planted pens and the ones i limed and frost seeded will be turned and replanted this fall. Keeps the ground sweet and bug free if you can do rotations. Kinda gives them a break!

We always limed in the spring before the fawns were born and once in the summer and once in the fall. Keeps the smell down if you have small pens and it cleans and nurtralizes the dirt the fawns eat . We had a fawn that liked clean dirt so much he died from impaction. Only happened once.

Definitely no stupid questions when it comes to deer farming... or life for that matter.  Just when you think you have it all figured out, mother nature will step in and put a hurtin on ya!  I've been doing this for 8 years and I learn something new almost every day.

Good luck to all... spring will be here before we know it.  Although for most of us, not nearly soon enough!

We used a two wheel grass seed spreader but it has to be real dry. A large shovel works the best we found.

I use Pellettized Lime in a hopper spreader on the 3 point of my Tractor works real well and have also used my Herd spreader n the back of my 4 wheeler

I use a drop spreader and have Ag lime brought in on dump truck....much cheaper. About 1 Ton per acre at this point in march sometime, will fertilize a little if needed and the run a drag over all my pastures. After dragging I will top dress the pastures with desired seed. I will also drag about two other times throughout the summer/early fall to break up thatch from mowing and help disperse and break down the manure. Just what I do....seems to work. I lime for both soil health and to minimize bacteria problems. No question is a dumb question.

My deer are fine with equipment. I guess my question really was is it safe to put it down while they are in the pen. We have been very rainy and wet. Having to treat for some foot problems and skin issues. Was suggested to lime the pens, but i can'tmove move them out right now.

I Use (Mperal) mix with water spray pens an anywhere I have deer Manure Build Up.Put Down A Little Lime. This Is In The Spring Before Fawning. Also Helps With Coccidiosis.
