Just Ordered BAM (dosage questions)

After years of tranquilizing with telazol/xylazine we've decided to order BAM. (TB testing time). My question is from the reviews I've read it is an amazing drug but everyone seems to use less than the recommended dosage. Up here in northern MN with our Tonto based genetics we have some hefty sized bucks around the 350+lbs. What dosage works well? I know calmness and genetics play a part into the amount needed(especially our Sunny genetics).

Looking at rate for:

Month old fawns

Weaned fawns

Does

Yearling bucks

Mature bucks

Any info would be greatly appreciated! thanks

I bet you will get a lot of different opinions on this topic.  I will throw in my 2 cents worth on your mature bucks.  I would use a full 2cc dart.  You could likely get by just as good with a 11/2 cc dose but I prefer safety over pinching pennies when darting especially large bucks.  I want 1 dose to do the trick.  Follow up shots when tranquilizing can end bad.

I would recommend 1" needles on the darts for your bucks.  Learned this one the hard way.  Shorter needles can leave the more of sedative in the fat on the deer instead of the muscle.  Your deer may go down and you can do whatever it is you need to do - reverse him and all is fine.  If the to much of the BAM is deposited in the fat he may go right back to sleep shortly after you reverse him.  He may get up and look good then 30 minutes later be out like a light again.  This happened to me and I thought sure I had killed the buck.  Had to give more reversal and spent the next 4-5 hours making the buck get up and walk it off.  Not good on the deer and stressful on the deer farmer.

We too are located in the North (MI).

I have used BAM for the first time just in the last two weeks. So far I am impressed.

My only experience is with 2 adult bucks and 1 adult doe. With the Bucks I followed the recommended dosage

and had no problems getting the deer down and out. With the doe a calm 10 footer I slightly dropped the dosage

to test it. She went down but not out completely so I hand syringed to knock her out. For now I will stick to recommended doses

until I get more experience with the product.

Reversal amazing! The bucks were up like nothing happened in 2 minutes. And the doe 10 minutes.

Mature bucks 2cc every time.

Mature does 1-1.5cc

Fawns over 1 month of age 0.5cc, under .25cc

How calm they are is huge! When I TB tested last year, I hit about 20 does and bucks 2-4 years old, ALL with 1.5cc, just because those were the darts I had.

They were all out in 5-7 minutes like ragdolls. A couple might twitch when you touch them, but that's it.

I just moved 4 bucks last weekend, 2-3 year olds, and used 1cc each. No problems!

1 inch darts are key, and low stress.

Reversal is awesome

Sounds like everyone here is on the same page. We also are in northern MN and have Lakota genetics resulting in bucks over 350lbs. 2cc is as much as we have ever needed on those big guys. We only dart calm deer. Keep your BAM at ambient room temp and you won't have a problem. We learned the hard way that BAM solution changes drastically if you let it get cool like below 40degrees f. If you don't like how they look when you get them knocked down just call me and I will come and get them. I would love some fresh Lakota in our herd.

I'm with todd..all depends how calm the deer is.

1/2cc fawns

1cc doe and yrling bucks

1.5 cc adult bucks

all the above is for CALM deer. Take notes most importantly. for instance i knocked an adult buck down with 1-1/2 cc a few weeks ago and he was snoring in 3 minutes. so i'll drop dose to 1-1/4 next time

You know what they say about opinions...but I used .25 cc's on fawns and I used .5 cc on a yearling buck.  Adult does I usually use .5-1.0 cc's.

When using reduced doses, you'll run out of the one reverser long before the sedative so you'll have to figure out how to get more elsewhere because they don't sell it separately.

Padencreek, I agree and use the same dosages on you. Todd is also correct on the calmer the deer, the better
