I just seen one of my fawns with a mass about the size of a baseball below its ear behind its jaw. Wondered if anyone seen anything like that or know what it might be?

Fuso bacteria abscess is more than likely what it is.

You may do one of two things. Let nature take it's course and the pressure will kill the skin at some point of the abscess and the puss will drain out.

The best thing to do is treat the abscess by making the drain hole yourself on the lower side of the abscess and drain the puss out of it by squeezing the abscess. You should flush the abscess out with a weak solution of peroxide. If flys are still bad in your area you should apply some sort of repellent.

Treatment is too give the animal a shot of 2cc Fuso guard and a shot of Draxxin. I give 1cc of draxxin myself. A second shot of Fuso Guard is required. This should be done with either method you allow the abscess to drain by.

i had one do the same thing i treated with 3x recommended amount of LA200 per body weight with 5cc of Albon and gave mylanta 5cc twice a day along with probiotics mass was pretty much gone by day 3. oh i treated this way for 4-5 days

Trigger,

If the mass was absorbed back into the body it was more than likely bruised tissue and blood as puss will not be absorbed. LA200 was my old choice of medicine but opted to go with Draxxin as it is a one shot med. in most cases and works great on puss abscess's.

One thing I do is check the abscess with a large needle/syringe 16 gage or 18 gage and draw back on it. If it is blood fluid it will be absorbed and antibiotic treatment is all that is needed. But if it is green toothpaste puss it will need to be drained. I forgot to mention this in above post.

This is not a bottle fed fawn so I can't get to close to it, so do how would I give it shots, do I dart it?

If you have no handling facility or isle way to run them to that facility guess darting is all you have for a choice. You would have had to sedate that fawn with that big of abscess anyway. Fawns that young are not usually darted as the shot area is so small. Darting could cause more problems than what you have now.

With that said if you do dart it Draxxin is your choice of medicine as you need a long acting antibiotic. Just follow method two and it will be ok. Also don't forget to check what kind of abscess you have. Good luck.

I went to the check on him this morning and the mass had a marble size hole in it and it was gone. Should I dart him down and give antibiocs or just keep a eye on him?

I think the chance of darting and causing problems outweighs any treatment at this time. I would just keep an eye on it. Nature has fixed the problem.

You should be made aware at some point you should use fuso Guard on all your animals as this will help them fight off this bacterium. Sometimes this bacteria will cause internal problems on organs which you will not see till it is too late.

KM, jack has given you good advice on that abcess. If it recurs you may want to consider sedating, lancing at treating as described above.

Good Luck
