Hi there, my 4 months old fawn had polio on October 11 and was treated with thiamine. She was much better but a month later she has having another milder episode of polio. I am really confused about her diet. Please help, I don't want this to happen again. Thanks.

If she is not getting appropriate nutrition from feed (grain) and browse, you need to supplement her intake with sub Q vitamins, and I would immediately start her back on deer formula/goat milk and add vitamins to her formula if necessary. This is what I have practiced (with success). I am not going to comment on your statement that your deer had Polio. She may have a thiamine deficiency, white muscle disease or something else. I would get a deer DVM to look at her.

Sounds like a thiamine deficiency. If it will still take a bottle you can put B1 straight in the milk to save from sticking it so many times. If no bottle you can still try dosing with a drench. I've had them relapse before and it seems like they have to stay on it longer the second time with a slower weaning off process. Good luck!

polio encephalitis if this is what your fawn has can be brought on by changing feed, going from low protein to a high protein feed, I use to get it with my goats, never had it with my deer but they are similar animals so Im sure it could. bose at birth is good in case of a defeciency. make sure you get some good alfalfa hay also, good luck!!!!
