I have read that deer only go into eosterus twice a year and that window for pregnancy is only a few hours, if that info is correct, is there any medicine that I can give to my deer to force them into eosterus so I can have a reliable calving schedule?

Yes, you can insert CIDRS for approximately 2 weeks and then give Folligon and breed 55-60 hrs later. Deer continue to cycle if they are not bred for a while. I just had a fawn go into heat a couple days ago.

cool, is that stuff expensive? and how much does the average semen straw cost?

That's kind of asking how much a car costs. You can get a beater for 500 or a Bentley. There is a wide range but decent stuff runs from 500 to 5000.

so entry level I'm looking at 500 a straw? :) how many does one straw do? and where are the best places to buy, bear in mind I'm from Ireland

Well my last name is O'Day but that's were my Ireland knowledge ends so I'm not sure the logistics of getting it there! Most deer farmers keep it at a storage facility and they can ship it out. 1 straw can be split 2 or 3 times if you perform laparoscopic Artificial Insemination. Conventional AI is generally not split so I would do one doe. There are many places to buy straws. Let me know if you are ever interested.
