I would like some opinions on what could have cause My Ai to be so POOR this year

First take you back to last yr We did our first Aiing our selves with me being in and out of the Hospital this whole time we hit 47% thought that was good for my first yr doing it myself. and being very sick

Now this Yr we Aied 31 does to several Bucks I did everything correct and the way it was supposed to be done low stress and we hit 200 days last sunday and so far only 2 Ai fawns any Ideas why?

after Ai the does went into a pen "the only open pen " it was right next to the 2 mature bucks i had we waited 15 days before we sorted the does out with the 2 bucks each buck in his own pen we didnt see much action i believe we only seen 2 or 3 does get backed up

All the does look like they could pop but no fawns just thought maybe someone could give me some ideas as what went so wrong Thanks Nick

Did you switch pmsg varieties ? From the info you have provided it is my opinion that you either encountered a synchronization issue because a different pmsg was used or the pmsg you got was bad. Some will cause ovulation way off the 56-60 hour window we normally see when we AI after using Folligon as the pmsg.

Sorry to hear of your problems.

Hang in there

Day wood , we do Ai for lots of farms with high success at some and marginal success at others, if you list your protocol we would be happy to discuss.

There are so very very many variables involved who knows what really happened.

Since your asking for thoughts I will jump in with mine based on the limited info given. Please don't take offense to my thinking out loud.

47% frankly is not good even for a first timer. Granted it is better than you appear to be getting this year.

31 does is quite a few does to do in one session. I have to assume you had lots of help since it sounds like you were the one busy thawing semen and preparing to insert it. How much jacking around might have taken place working 31 does through the system comes to mind.?.?

Also the timing of working that many does at one time considering how ever much help you had.

They went into "a pen"

Was this the same pen they had been in prior? Change causes stress.

Were they all together in one group prior to AI? Again change causes stress.

"Right next to two mature bucks."

The mature bucks might have been working those 2 common fence lines causing stress to the does. It is good for bucks and does to be in smelling distance of each other in the days leading up to the AI to help cause the does to reach heat. That according to a expert in the art of AI. But during the time the does are supposed to settle it might have been better to avoid the close contact.

"...we sorted the does out with the 2 bucks each buck in his own pen..."

It is always best to bring the back up buck to the does. Again to try and keep stress low on the does by least amount of change.

Also it sounds like a sorting took place to divide the group of does. Again stress because this can cause a whole new pecking order to be reestablished among the does.

AGAIN just some thoughts from the limited info given. Hope you get some late does yet from the AI.

We averaged 1 doe ever 6 minutes my does are pretty calm and work pretty easy they were all in the pen together before and after the Ai the sorting went really smooth but i do understand how that could have stressed them out with the new pen and pecking order thanks for your thought i will consider them this fall when i do it again as for the 47% what average do most get when Aiing i have been told anywhere from 60-85 percent so i felt good about the 47% with all that was going on that yr at that time I didnt take offense to anything you had to offer and i appreciate every bit of it gives me some things that i might change this year Thanks

I would'nt be so fast to think you missed them at 200 days. We had Doublewide fawns at 209 last summer. I also breed my own. I have been very lucky so far as i have only missed 2 does out of 46 bred so far. I do not split straws. They get the whole thing regardless the cost of the straw. I want fawns if im going to ai to a buck.

Stress has alot to do with ai but to have it affect the numbers you are talking about i believe would be a stretch. Possible yes but just seems like alot of does not to take because of that reason.

Four Seasons, congrats on your success, we do our own AI work as well as AI for deerfarms in Texas, Missouri, PA., Ohio and Indiana. At our farm we use full straws because we want specific crosses and over the years we have seen a higher percentage of conception with whole straws versus splitting straws. There are some straws that we split , only after seeing a history of high conception with these straws. There are some straws that we would not split simply because they are marginal quality. We keep records of our AI percentages and without a doubt using a whole straw will give you a higher percentage of conception than splitting straw. We also see more singles with split straws! With the cost of quality semen at a all-time low I can not think of a good reason to split straws unless you are using expensive semen and breeding for the breeder's market. Using expensive semen to breed stocker bucks is counterproducive and will bankrupt your farm.

according to a few i have talked to i should have a few more days so hopefully they start to drop i dont see how they could carry much longer thanks for every ones thoughts

Did you check your semen under scope perhaps it went bad. I have seen this before.
