AI or Backup buck

I might be wrong but I think that the estrus cycle for whitetail is for 28 days.

If this is correct and we consider that an average fawning date would be 196 days, so then half of the estrus cycle (14 days) would be at 210 days after AI, so at 210 you should have a 50% chance of being from AI and a 50% chance of being from the backup.

My reasoning is that up to 205 days after AI it should be pretty sure its from the Ai buck. From 205 to 210 it could still be from the AI but your chances are getting too close to the borderline. You should definitively confirm through DNA.

These are simple math calculations made by someone who still has a lot to learn from these animals so take it with a lot of reserve.

I just got DNA results back on a yearling buck that was born on day 208 last year. I had him marked to the backup buck and intended him to be a shooter. DNA results came back that he was out of AI buck. Couldnt believe it.

Wow Todd that gives me a little more hope on a few does this year :) the latest our AI has ever went is 204. I feel like Wayne ,after 200 I dont have much hope.

DNA is $65-75 per sample. Gestation in Whitetail deer has been documented between 180-221 days. DNA to know for sure.

DNA to be sure, I think it is money well spent so you know for sure what you have. My first fawn's were born on day 185 this year.

Josh and Tood are right on. After 15 years or charting I have not had any go over 205 days. But the good ones I DNA verify, as Josh says 185 the earliest I have had and 205 late. That is putting back up in at 15 days after, some does have earlier cycle time I have noticed 20+ days more so than the 28, just my 2 cents.
