ALFALFA daily serving

Hello everyone.

I am writing to obtain opinions regarding how much alfalfa others are feeding their deer. I started feeding alfalfa a couple of weeks ago and my deer love it. I was lucky to get some high quality alfalfa this year and the problem is that the deer love it maybe a little to much. I want to limit each days serving so that they continue eating the sweet feed which from a nutritional standpoint has alot more of what they need. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Daniel Zola

I'm going to tell you what I do and by all means its not the only way, I'm a very small farmer and mainly just a hobbiest we cattle instead. is what I do is give them 5 1/2 gallons of purina deer chow (the textured kind) and then on the Alfalfa I give a sleeve thats about 6in deep from the bale, just enough for them to eat it all and still want there feed. in the winter I give them alittle more to get the leafy diet for them since theres no leaves or folage for them to eat its good for there bellys. hope it helps

great does any one know where to get supper qul. alfalfa around nj/ east pa ?????

we start all our deer out slow for the first week or so then we simply keep it out all winter in All Season hay feeders free choice it works great for us!

We also have alfalfa free choice during the winter. They still eat the pellet as well but their appetites are a lot less during the winter months.

Hollow Road,They definatey slow up on the textured feed but seems to balance out as they grow acustomed to having both available. It is deffinately worth it.

One more benefit of the alfalfa is that it is an excellent source of roughage fiber. Lets say your mix is 15% fiber that's great but the fiber in your pellets is not a very good source of roughage fiber. Deer need roughage fiber to help grind their feed.

I started on hay a couple weeks ago and for a few days she didn't touch feed for a few days because it was something new but she has balanced out her feeding now.
