Hello:

Does anyone know where I can find high quality rope saw/piano cord style antler cutters? If anyone is making their own, what materials are you using and where did you get those materials. I have purchased and used this style before and it worked well but the quality wasn't there and after two deer they simply broke apart.

Also, I would like to hear what other farmers are using. After our rope saws broke last year we had no choice but to use a cordless sawzall. That was on sedated deer. This year we will be cutting in our handling facility and I fear that might be too stressful for the deer with the noise and vibration of the saw.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

We use a PVC pipe saw from Lowes. It is a piece of steel wire with handles on each end. We can cut both sides in about 2 minutes. Cost about $5.

I use a quality bone saw that butchers use and it works great and is quick...and stays sharp forever. Make sure it is a finer toothed blade. Just bought a new one last year that was a little bigger toothed, and it sucks.

Sawzall in the chute all 1 and 2 year olds...........just watch everyones fingers and it is done both sides in seconds!

Alabowhunter: How durable are they? ie..how many buck can you cut before replacment?

Sanctuary & dtala: What blade do you use?

Thanks

I haven't had to replace them yet. We've cut several with the same set. There's not alot to wear out, it's just a piece of wire. It's quiet and I was told by several vets that the vibrations from a reciprocating saw can rattle their brain enough to cause brain damage. Good Luck.

You still have to hold the head while some one cuts them off ! We use 3 people to do it and 5 years later we have had NO problems.
