ANTLER cutting

Cut just above the burr about 1/2 inch that way all the pen mates are safe. If you cut one they all have to be cut. If antlers are left on sooner or later one will get stabbed and die.

ill second that jack i lost one of my nicest yearlings to date a 18.5" wide 4x4 clean no junk and my sweetest doe she would come up to you like a dog and the kids were just all crazy about her

I try to cut around velvet removal or just before that so about August 15. Give them a week after velvet removal and they know how to use their antlers and they will kill each other when run into tight areas. I'd rather have a little blood loss from cutting antlers early than a stabbed deer.

We will be cutting our only bucks antlers for the first time this year. He is 2 1/2 and already he wouldn't let me in the pen the other day, and he runs our two girls from september to march. It is just too dangerous. Any suggestions on what kind of saw to use?

We use a Dewalt straight saw blade (cordless) ....works great .If your Deer still has velvet make sure you have rubberbands in handy.... to stop the bleeding .

I use a bone saw. It is a stainless steel wire with rings on each end that you pull back and forth. It allows you to get down to the top of the burr and is virtually impossible to injure the deer with it.

i dont know if i would use a power saw of any sorts,,, a bone saw that out fitters us to 1/4 deer in the field works great ! ALWAYS put a hood or t-shirt over the deers eyes ( black ) perf, i think it helps to keep the junk out ie, saw dust ect, and ALWAYS.ALWAYS. KEEP THE BUCKS HEAD A LITTLE DOWN HIIL , because some times when they are comen out they will throw-up and if the head is up hill they will drown, if the head is down it will drain out , what do you guys think ?????

Gas will build up in their belly causing bloat if you lay them down hill.

oh. so whats one to side hill /up hill ???? wheres the head to be ????? thanks for your in put and time on this ,

Never had any issues with a Dewalt cordless straight saw..I use the blade with the small teeth and smooth they go.... within seconds .

I can understand using a bone saw of string type for a couple of deer, but when you do a herd of 130 bucks in line.....the string saw will get you tired ....but not the cordless saw . :)

my vote is for the saw.... cord or cordless...a lot less stress on the deer cause your done in 30 sec. not 3-4 minutes
