Antler Growth

Well, seems like a good time to discuss this question that goes through my mind at this time of year. Questions: What do you think about the speed of growth?? Does a buck that grows faster than "usual" get a bigger rack (tine length, beams , mass) than one that is growing at a slower rate? Does one of these "fast" bucks have stickers and non typ. points get longer than a slower one. Does a fast buck peak faster or just get more because it grows faster and for the same length of time as a slower one? Are these fast bucks antlers "made" the same as a slower one? I have done a lot of work making things from antlers and you see some that some tines and points are kind of porous and some are solid. I guess a porous rack would be able to lager by spreading out the material rather than it being solid. I wonder about the antlers of the huge bucks if they are of an extra porous construction because of its size and if the faster they grow , the more porous the get?? Does a slower grower get to his max size or if he grew faster , he would be bigger?? Add in your own thoughts and ideas....food for thought. Jim

My thoughts are, they all "finish". Some do it earlier than others. I have some bucks that I think are done as of 7-1-09, and some that will grow into September. I dont know about the hardness of the antler.

I think that the porous antlers are a result of a buck rubbing velvet off a little early. I do not know if this is a true fact, but I had a 6 point last year that appeared to rub off velvet to early because his points were still "clubby" looking at the ends, the antler was very porous looking after he cleaned them up.
