Getting ready to install electric wire on out side of pen . What gauge wire should i use or does it matter . I have always used the heavy stuff for cattle , but i can buy the lighter gauge for half the price , if will serve the same purpose .

We use 1/4 inch premium rope by (bayguard) with 6 strands of copper wire. Works great for us ... I've seen Raccoons bounce of once they are hit with 3 joules.we have them at 4 inches off the ground then another 4 inches then finally another 5 . Good luck !!!

I was helping with an agriculture project in Burkina Faso they needed a fence around the irrigation project to keep the goats, children and everyone else out so you could actually get a crop, we sent a 12 volt 25 mile fencer, the manager thought the electric fence should be on the inside of the chain link fence to keep the kids from stealing the insulators, they were adamant that that little wire was a waste of time...we let him test the fence first.....no one would go second... all the small farmers wanted to know how much it cost and where they could get one

Use fiberglass poles...three wires and make the middle wire a ground so that if anything hits one wire, they will also touch the ground wire....they will really get zapped!

Hey guys, I am building a pen in an area where there is no full time electric. I assume there are SOLAR electric fences on the market. Anyone used one of these setups? Brand names? sources? Any advise? Thanks, Buckman

We started with a solar shocker. It was strong enough to make the dog yelp. I think it was around .6 jewels but I wanted to smell smoke. We installed a 12 gauge wire powered by a 6.9 jewel shocker. I'm thinking about switching to a 480v powered unit. Just so I can yell out the back door "go ahead punk make my day" and to remove the finger prints.:D

to keep dogs from running the length of the fence. what if you ran the electric every 50 ft. or so perpendicular to the fence, maybe just 10 or 20 feet out.,so they would have to go under or over.but they might choose not to do either.

dearjohn,

I had the same idea in fear of dogs running the length of my pen. I decided against it due to the anount of mowing and weed eating you would have to do to keep your wire hot. So I decided to just fence (4ft cattle) my entire property in. I work a regular job and am gone most of the day. I think its the only way I would be able to sleep at night. Now they have two barriers plus predator wire.
